Genesis 80FI dependability?

Nah. I actually researched it. After I got my 87 Exciter, I started hearing about reliability issues with Exciters. When all the information was in, I was able to determine that the engine in mine was virtually indestructable. I still have that sled and my gf is going to be riding it this winter.

Ok, you all have convinced me.
I was thinking about it at work today (I have a boring job as a generator tester, so I have lots of time to think about stuff) and I thought to myself that street bike engines, even high-revving crotchrocket engines run a really long time, the RX-1 and Apex havent really had engine problems and that reason is dust (like you guys said). Off-road engines typically dont last as long because of all the dust they operate in.
So, Im not at all worried about the Phazer engine lasting a long, long time.
Who knows, if I can sell my YFZ maybe I will call around to the local Yamaha dealers and see if they have any Phazers left. Gotta love the Yamaha card!

Interesting LB, thanks. I've never heard about that but it did burn quite a few pistons. We had it rebuilt at Yamaha dealers and no one ever mentioned it. We didn't keep the sled for a very long time, just too unreliable and we referred to it as a piece of sh!t.

It is amazing what one bad experience will do for your view of a brand. Until the 4-stroke sleds came out, I didn't even look at a Yamaha.

I'll be looking forward to reading the Phazer ride reports on the forums in a few short months.

There was a problem with the 88 carbs, and it was a WEIRD problem. They were a BAD combination for the engine - they were subject to HARMONIC RESONANCE, which caused the gas to bubble out of the float bowls, which caused the engine to suck on air, and of course 2-stroke lean = burn pistons. The 87's were DEAD RELIABLE, but difficult to start if you didn't know the "trick". For that reason, they changed the carbs. When the problem was discovered, they offered free replacement float bowls that solved the problem.

My dealer update the jetting/needles and airbox on my new 88 Before it left the show room and I put a very happy 5000+ miles on the 570 !

When something is "Based" off of another...... exactly what does that mean ? Seriously though, can this not mean simply that it has charastic's (sp?) of another design ?

Also, I believe the basic design similarity is limited to the 'top end' of the motor....Although this is sort of obvious since it's a twin :drink:
