Ok, I know it's been asked about and a few posts, but, I have an '03 RX1 mountain, and tried a strap wrench, but can't get a bite, and one of those plastic cap type that you use a 3/8" ratchet on, but it won't clear the steering arm nut. Any other ways, other then a screwdriver through it? This is one of the biggest blunders they made, as far as letting a guy work on his own sled.
All ideas appreciated (other then dynamite, which could be next!!!)

screwdriver through it. :o|

Next time oil the o-ring on the filter and hand tighten it.

I cut the middle little piece of metal off of the back of the battery tray and use a big Channel lock plier on the filter. It works great. Loosen the filter and fight to get it out without dumping all the oil out. With all the turbo hoses and wiring, I can't remove the battery tray so I have to fight around that also.LOL

instead of oil on the o-ring use grease for a better seal and easier removal.

Get a gell batery and do the relocation. That way you get rid of the tray and its easyer to get to the filter. ;)!

Get the steel cap type that you can throw a big azz wrench on if you need to, I have used a breaker bar with swivelling socket head a few times. Also the big all purpose filter pliers work well, but can be a little messy.

Call Kevin at Port washington Yamaha. He has the tool that works well.

I use a chain type puller, the chain will grab the filter. If you cannot get it loose with a filter tool, as a last resort, carefully punsh a thin screwdriver thru the upper part of the filter and unscrew the filter. This procedure can potensially destroy the mountin plate and threads for the oil filter so be careful doing it that way.

As said earlier, oil and grease the oil filter and the mounting surface and hand tighten the filter, do not use a tool to tighten.

better yet buy the Ulmer relocation kit, and get it where you can work on it. Maxdlx
