CaptCaper said:60csx is awesome for riding. But I like the bigger screen of the 276C so I got one of those too but it is more money. I bought both refurbished with Garmin garantee so they were a good deal.
Both of these are water proof were the Nuvi and others arent. Ram mount is in order too. I mounted it on the riser.
I have the Nuvi 550. It is Absolutely water proof! Mine has been submerged underwater and still works flawlessly! It has a nice big, color screen that can be used with gloves on. I use mine in my truck also. I agree that a Ram mount is a must. I bought a disk with trails for the north east on sledgps.com

You can load Google Earth into the Garmin? I know you can overlay the tracks into Google Earth from either the 60cs series or the 276C as well.
I use both Topo Maps and Street maps in my Garmins because Topo doesn't show all streets we cross or go down and Street Maps don't show all Topo features like lakes, terrain, etc. back roads.
With my units I can show both at once or toggle between them.
You can load the google earth map sets into the Garmin - if you want the actual sattelite imagery you pay $30 for a year's worth of unlimited downloads - it is called BirdsEye (Garmin product).

I don't plan on spending alot of money on one but I have decided I want a handheld version that I can put in my pocket.
These are the three I have acess to at stores:
this one I can get at my local Sam's Club:
http://www.samsclub.com/sams/shop/produ ... ction=push
This one I can get at Target which I have a $150 gift card I could use:
http://www.target.com/Garmin-Handheld-G ... ombrowse=0
...And this one that some of you mentioned I can get at Costco:
http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product.as ... en-US&Sp=C
The thing I like about the 60 series is the SD card slot. What I don't like about that unit is the antenna like device that sticks up. The Vista H is decent for the price ,but is 28 MB internal memory enough?
Now which one is my question.

I have the iSledMN and it works OK now after the last update. My only gripe is that is doesn't zoom in enough yet. It now has plotting on it so it keeps track of where you are.
I have a nuvi500 with vvmapping and a GPSmap640 with redpine maps. Love the bigger screen as hand helds are to small....

I am using a Nuvi 1300 inside a medium wide aqua box with a ram mount to the steering post on the Apex Ltx . I got the Redpine mapping card to use for trails . So far the system is working pretty good . The gps stays warm in the aqua box , that was one of the complaints the motorcyle guys had that use the box in the summer . It does route you down the trails and changes route ( different color ) when you decide to make a diferent turn than it wanted you to go , can't hear her saying "recalculating !! " , which is kinda nice !! Over all pretty well happy with the setup .

The Etrex ya can't load maps into. The basemaps that come with it are very very minimal. I'd go with a 60CS or 60CSX. You can get them cheaper and will hold detailed Topos you can get from someone. You don't need to unlock the older Topos available everywere. Bigger screen too.
I have the 60CS for years now. Only difference is more sensitive reciever in the X but I never needed it out in the woods or trails. You can get one of them cheap.
I'll send you a copy of the topo CD to have.

Thanks for this info. I think I can live with the goofy antenna on the top. Just looked like it might be less friendly for the pocket if you know what I mean. A friend at work uses an Oregon 550T which is sweet but they are spendy. The cheapest Oregon series is around $300.

I used my 60cs for hiking lot's of mountains here before I used it for snowmachineing. I then got a refurbished 276 which had a bigger screen.
The 60cs has been flawless in use. You can get a data cable for it to power it off your sled 12v's as well. Ram sells good mounts for it.
It's a much better all around unit for data (speed, alitude, etc.) as well. These units do so much more for off road then the Nuvi's I own Nuvi's and use them all the time for on road only. The 60cs will do auto routing as well it just doesn't have a voice to tell you the turns and streets. It has beeps to do that.

I cant begin to count the times we have rolled my sled over to get unstuck
..and the times it has rolled all alone.
..lol..My ram mounted 60csx is in the middle of my bars..and when rolled the sled pushes on the GPS..and it has never poped out ..it works fine and the ram mount is rock solid..As a matter of fact..just took me 3 hours to put bolts and plastic screws..and bend some brackets back into place..only the handle bars and ram mount were still tight.
.I shall video this when we go next week to Gaspie..

I just use my phone and the Orux maps as it is free and it used the same topo maps that every gps uses. Works awesome. Tells me top speed of the day and where I hit it elevations, ect. everything you can think of....it's pretty cool.

Anyone use the new pn-60w with the spot communicator. Seems like a good idea if you are ridding alone outside of cell phone range. My gps started having issues so I just ordered one of these for snowmobiling and to go with my new mountain bike. Being able to send a sms out may give some people a a little big of piece and mind.
