04 rx-1 with typical muffler gut. not the complete gut, just crossover pipes. sounds great but sled falls on face when you hit the gas while in garage on a stand. so the first thing i tried was removing stock airbox lid, wow did that make it waaaaay worse! definetly a lean issue. flames out the pipes and all! the sled starts and idles perfectly but when you give it over half throttle it bogs then catches up finally. the quicker you hit the gas the worse it gets. all stock jetting now. i was under the impresion that no jetting is required with muffler gut. this is happening @ 50*F imagine this winter -20*F. any suggestions would be much appreciated. ps in a hurry man! snows coming!lol

sounds like you need to rejet there a few member here that have done the same thing and had to rejet. As far a jet sizes I couldnt tell you but someone will let you know

Check for obvious stuff
bad or old gas
sled must be fully warmed up before giving it throttle
TORS switch? override it.
fouled plug; even they they can look good u may have a bad one
Airbox not installed correctly(air leak)
plugged pilot jet
bad coil
weak stator
that should keep ya busy. A minor exhaust mod won,t lean out your motor that bad.

Yeah I have done a bunch of exhaust guts and also run Hauck get r duns on 2 of the 3 Rx's I have now and none required a rejet. Rejet is only necessary when you change the air box. I would think it is the plugs or plugged carb jets.

When you did the muffler mod, did you change anything else at the same time? When was the last time you cleaned the carbs?

I would say the carbs need cleaning or carbs are not set in the intake boots correctly or cracked.

bump your pilot jets up 2 steps and go from there. that will help fatten it up with the transition between idle and full

fresh gas, as sled warmed it never improved at all, tors malfunction has more of a rev limiter effect-this is not the case at all- turns past 10,000 rpm after stumbling, disconnected each coil to check for foul-all ok,will check airbox leak, plugged jet will not idle on one or more cylinders-all of them fire perfectly at idle, bad coil-checked by unplugging each at a time while running-ok, weak stator? is the lighting coil separate from ignition primary?- i could check voltage while reving engine. if they are separate, i could check voltage at coil primary wires while reving engine. thanks for great replies.

very good question. i only did the one muffler mod. never cleaned carbs and figured they are fine because it idles perfectly.

with these problems, wouldnt the idle be the first thing to be affected? this engine idles like new. perfect.

I have to admit that the idle does throw me a bit. But, the carbs are highly suspect casue you are early in the season, there is a high potential for crap to get caught in the jets, etc.

Did you put in new exhaust donuts and make sure the exhaust is sealed all the way to the tail pipe.

thats the kind of solid info i need. i would have figured muffler mods could never affect jetting that severly. you have to think about the fact that it is 50*F now. imagine -20*F. i think my next moves are check for airbox leak, then clean carbs, then ask more questions!

i never removed the muffler. just gutted in place, then rewelded. im leaning more towards cleaning carbs now, but the idle thing is strange.
