I'm looking for something different than my apex, but can't decide if I need the long or the short track. I do all groomed trail.
I'm looking for comparisons between the two from people that rode both models. My big concerns are ride quality, steering effort, cornering tight trails, stability, difference in speed and milage.

I haven't owned a Nytro short track but have owned many short track sleds and have an xtx and a srx that I 136ed. I am likely to never buy another short track sled. I don't really notice any handling determent and the benefits in ride quality, off trail flotation, traction and off throttle stability are significant.

Longer tracks greatly reduce the rear slide effect during cornering, braking, hard aceleration. Extra traction and floatation when you need it, just like Leeko said. Studs on a 121 will help but it's not quite the same effect. Since my 91 PhazerII LT I've tried a couple 121's between then and my 05 Rage kept me on the LT's now with the XTX I'll never go back to a 121. There is a great trail system where I live, and I mostly stay on them. Time to time off trail is nice and a lot of fun. There are times on the trail when snow is fresh and loose. Other guys on their 121's complain in these snow conditions and I laugh!
I was looking at a XTX but the dealer sold it yesterday. Now I'm looking Nytro FX. I mostly ride trails with the kids. I would take it out to the Big Horns once a year but that would be in late March so I would assume it would do OK in the set up snow.
The price I was quoted was 6800 out the door with a custom cover. Is that a good price for an '08?

Try Heinen's in Osseo. They had a few XTX machines on Ebay last week and the prices seemed quite good. Is it Brother's that still has the 08 standard Nytro?
It is the dealer in Delano. I will check out Heinens tonight. Do you own one jwifferdill?

I'd avoid the '08 Nytros if I could. The front end geometry was "twitchy" if you are a casual rider. As well, the subframe on '08s was unreinforced. I would try to find at least an '09 FX Nytro with the new front suspension. Personally I have an XTX, so I am biased, but I have found NO disadvantage to having the extra track length and wouldn't buy a short track sled again. The bump-bridging and smoother ride of the longer tracks is worth it alone if you trail ride. The off-trail capabilities (reason I buy longtracks) is a bonus for you! Just my opinion though.

Since you say you ride trails more, I would definitely go with the xtx over any of the short tracked nytro's.
I have ridden all versions, except the 09 rtxSE, and I really enjoyed the 09 XTX. If you want to play elsewhere other than trails, the xtx has the capability, and the shock package is really nice on the XTX, better all around than the rtx, unless you are going to pound moguls all day.
The 144" track on the xtx really smooths out the stutter bumps and rides very well on all trails, rough or smooth.
Now if you are a smaller built guy, then the extra track length might give you a little more work out.
As a matter of fact, If I were to be in the market for a new sled now, I would have the 09 xtx at the top of my list. It's that nice.
I suggest you track down the demo crew and see which you like.

I just bought mine from the delano dealer about 3 weeks ago. Very happy with the process.
I know St Boni Motorsports also had some.

I do not own one, but would like to. My brother just bought an extended 08 RTX and it is a lot of fun to ride. I love my Apex but the Nytro just has a completely different feel. My next sled is going to be a long track and the XTX I think would fit the bill for me perfectly. My riding season is over this year (fractured my hip on Sunday, yuck) but if I can find a taker for my Apex I should be all over an XTX for next winter.

It sounds like the xtx would be the better trail cruiser of the two,but can it keep up in the twistys with the longer track? Is the steering alot heavier than the shorty?

I'm in the same boat as you Berge. I've ridden both but I'm leaning towards the short track since I ride trails mainly. You can always extend to 128" or 136" or even 144" later.

I'm looking at either a 2010 RTX or 2010 XTX....in black! I owned a '08 RTX (40th) and enjoyed the sled. Most of my riding is similar to berge75 & dfroster....mostly groomed trails. I rarely explore the experience off trail.
I'm really caught in the middle right now. Both have their individual advantages and disadvtages. I just don't think I would be an individual that would benefit from the XTX's 144" track due to my riding style. So, I guess I'm leaning towards the RTX.

If you ask me the 121 just isnt enough track for that engine..all you do with the 121 is dig down and get stuck.
The xtx is much more stable than the shorty..it doesnt want to buck you off as much.
If your hitting alot of approches then the 121 would be the better of the two..i love my dads 121 nytro on the approches, it seems like no matter how you come off them the sled will level itself out and land perfect.
Still like the xtx better!!
