I think N.Y. law is only stock exhaust is legal . My friend got a ticket for a can on a rev. Tug Hill is loaded with sheriff ,DEC,state police, and once I was stopped by I think some kind of park police also. I don't think they check deb. just visual .

So what you are saying is "You can get a ticket if your exhaust looks loud" Hmm! :dunno:

I'm not real sure exactly how the law reads and I'm not a lawyer but it says the exhaust has to kept stock. One of my riding buddies got a ticket for a can on his 670 skidoo. He fought it and won but thats not the point.

1050, Ive read your post about 10 times. I finally have an answer. The problem with ny is, you have to leave the exhaust alone. Thats kind of the point of my hole yami stamped "GYTR" muffler. If it says Yamaha on it who the frig cares how loud it is. as far as the cops go???

Below are the Minnesota regulations for snowmobile mufflers. Last year a DNR officer told me it was illegal to have an after market exhaust on a sled. My take is; his remark was not strictly accurate. It seems to me you can have an after market exhaust if it does not exceed 78db at 50 ft or violate the other parameters listed.

I am sure that arguing with a trail cop about what is "excessive or unusual" would be futile.

• Snowmobiles must be equipped with mufflers that are in good working order and that do not produce sharp popping or cracking sounds or excessive or unusual noise. Some after-market exhaust systems may not meet this requirement and may not be lawful to operate.
• You may not operate or sell a snowmobile built on or after April 1, 1975 that exceeds 78 decibels on the A scale at 50 feet, except
under a permit of the DNR or county sheriff.

Here is the NYS law:

Mufflers. An adequate muffler system in good working condition. On
and after June first, nineteen seventy-two, no snowmobile manufactured
after June first, nineteen seventy-two shall be sold or offered for sale
unless it is equipped in such a way as to limit noise produced by the
snowmobile to not more than eighty-two decibels as measured on the "A"
scale at fifty feet. On and after June first, nineteen seventy-five, no
such snowmobile manufactured after June first, nineteen seventy-five
shall be sold or offered for sale unless it is equipped in such a way as
to limit noise produced by the snowmobile to not more than seventy-eight
decibels on such scale. On and after June first, nineteen eighty, no
such snowmobile manufactured after June first, nineteen eighty, shall be
sold or offered for sale unless it is equipped in such a way as to limit
noise produced by the snowmobile to not more than seventy-three decibels
on such scale. Should the federal government adopt snowmobile noise
level standards different from those contained in this paragraph and
require that the state conform thereto, the commissioner shall be
authorized to adopt rules and regulations superseding the noise level
requirements of this paragraph to achieve compliance with federal
standards. No snowmobile shall be modified by any person in any manner
that shall amplify or otherwise increase total noise emission to a level
greater than that emitted by the snowmobile as originally constructed,
regardless of date of manufacture.

OK Guys, I think the question is this. If it is law, then is it inforced and that's what you need to worry about.

What I have seen the last two seasons is n.y. is in need of money generated by fines.I was ticketed for having a invalid ins. card that ran out two weeks earlier. My policy was good for 6 more months but card had run out which I don't under stand why polices is one year but cards are only six months. If you have ever been to the hill on a weekend you will be stopped at least once and they do check you out and will give tickets for loud exhaust . The day I was ticketed we were stopped three times.

I have snowmobiled on Tug Hill for 20+ years, mostly weekends, and have been stopped exactly one time. Routine reg. and insurance check, all in order have a nice day.

Not 2 stir the pot but wouldnt leavin the stock exhaust alone end this whole problem? If it aint broke then dont fix it......Seems pretty simple 2 me. I live in an area in north minnesota where we lost a vital link in our trail system between west duluth and hermantown because of loud exhaust. For a while you could get to the cutoff spot where the trail was closed and a 6 place flatbed would shuttle you and your sleds around the lost trail for a pretty penny $$$$$$$ but thats gone now as well. Spendin hundreds of dollars to have to worry abt getting a ticket dont make much sense to me. Dont get me wrong...I love the sound of a sweetly tuned system but I would rather go quiet if it means keepin our trails open. :yam:

Guys, take my word on this, go under your sled look at the mufler, see the CCSS certicication plate? Without that place your NOT legal!!!
