Was looking at HID kits, thinking of buying one from BOP, when I saw these LED conversions on Ebay. Anyone try one of these? Maybe the cheap ones on Ebay are complete crap, but I was wondering if a good LED conversion is even close to comparable to a HID. I've been using LED strip lights for a while to do trailer lighting and under and inside cabinets in kitchens, and some of those are holy sheet bright, to the point I found some are unusable if you don't put them indirect or diffuse them.
Anyone with experience thoughts on these?

yes the newer led bulbs are ridicoulsly bright, but still #1 problem will be your halogen reflector simply not designed for that kind of intensity = blinding to oncoming traffic. The beam will scatter big time unless you use a projector lens. There are some awesome projector/HID retrofit kits out there from Morimoto and FXR and many others. A good ballast is important also that route. Many will say their HID's work great in their stock reflector, so really its all personal preference.
Just search youtube for some before and after "stock Halogen vs HID projector" and you will see what I mean.

It is good to check amazon out when it comes to products like this. That is how I have been researching what I want to buy for an LED light bar for my truck. Products tend to have reviews from buyers so you get some pretty honest feedback if you read through. Im sure there are kits on amazon also.

I looked up some info surrounding your suggestion. The morimoto projector lens kit turns out is 3rd party sourced and the manufacturer sells the same kits/quality for 1/3 the cost, The HID's for Morimoto are also built by another manufacturer but those are proprietary and are NOT sold except thru morimoto. I might just get the retro fit kit for $50 and do my stock halogens and black gloss the stock reflectors. You can add HID or LED at anytime after that.

That thread is spot on for doing a HID retro fit into the stock assembly, lots of videos of people doing the same idea on youtube to help see visually how the projectors assemble and how to adjust them so they align correctly in the stock reflectors. Also on the final page is a sweet sled with the reflectors and the projectors shot in black like I was thinking of doing.
Just check out Rockmeister on here, his HID kits are purope built for the sleds and super easy to install. I just bought a set at hay days from him. the ballast is the size of a thick credit card and the harness is plug and play. His web site does not have them on it yet but he has many neat products

i have had rocks kits in my apex and now my viper and i will never ride again without hids. i would not chance it for a cheaper kit for the chance of going home in the dark with a blown ballast... like yamadog said his kits are built for sleds and there are so many people on here with his hids they are one of the best you can buy. and his customer service is top notch!Just check out Rockmeister on here, his HID kits are purope built for the sleds and super easy to install. I run one of rocks in my et410. works really well and I like how easy the install is. I have a vid up of it in that sled. on the snow it works great, in my supermoto it does not project as far but is way brighter.

Lets bring this back around to the real intent, and that is to hear from anyone who has done or seriously investigated doing the LED headlight conversion. So far we have heard that:
1. LED headlight bulbs are cheap, easily obtained and extremely bright. They also eliminate the need for the fragile and energy wasting ballasts.
2. LED's have the same issue a retro fitted HID would have in a stock halogen designed reflector: massive scatter and no projection. It also is likely to really upset oncoming sleds with its obnoxious blasting light pattern.
3. The headlight would need to be contained in a projector housing to solve the scatter and projection issues associated with it. This necessitates the dis-assembly of the headlight housing and use of a projection housing retrofit kit, preferably one that uses the active shutter/solenoid technology utilized originally by higher end HID kits like Morimoto and is now openly available from multiple sources.
Any other input on the feasibility or retro-fit of the LED headlight for use on a sled?

I got some LED ones for the Viper from Sledlights and they do have a ballast as well. I am going to try the HID kit I got from Rock first. If I like it, I will put the LED's into my 1100 VStar.
