I have been struggling with my hand warmers for 3 seasons now and I'm tired of it. I've tried the yamaheaters but that doesn't help if the unit controling it doesn't work properly... How do I go about fixing it.

My other option is to buy an after market setup and bypass the factory unit.

Get in touch with Rock ( Rockmeister), he should be able to help you chase down the problem. ;)!

I've worked with rock on this several times. He said i'm an idiot and I should just get a new sled. Lol

How does the hand warmer work? What controls it? What components are involved? What test can I run? What should the test results be?

The handwarmers themselves are very simple. two wires running through the grip. First thing to check is unplug them and check continuity to make sure the warmer wires aren't broke.

Measure the resistance and compare to the spec

If both warmers check out then you have a bad ECU, buy a used one from a sled yard and try that.

Also remember with out the yamaheaters they will only come on at 5000 rpms or higher, so idling in your garage wont work.

If you have the yamaheater then turn them on while idling and they will get hot hot hot.

Tested all items related to grips and wires. Must be the ecu. That's the main one for the sled or is it just for grips.

It comes out of the main one for the sled. So when you adjust the temp it shows up in the display but nothing happens? Even the yamaheater doesn't get them to come on? The its definitly the ECU.

I may be wrong, but I thought the yamaheater bypassed the ecu when you toggle it to full heat(no bars). Is that not correct??

That is correct but it interfaces with the ECU to trigger the relay I believe so if his ECU is shorted out on the hardwarmer circuit (easy to do if he was prodding around with a multimeter) then the yamaheater wont know that it needs to turn on and bypass the ECU. Make sense?

Haven't dug into the harness yet but the symptems fit the discription. The light indicator for the Yamaheaters will flicker on and off and I get an error code 81 when I switch back to regular heat. which is the open or short code for the hand warmers.

I have verified continuity from ECU to the yamaheater. verified resistence from Yamaheater through grips. pulled the conector pins out of connectors and inspected. I didn't find any rubbed areas on the harness. So I believe I've isolated it to the ECU. should have it in about a week.

I had a problem with mine on my 06. The dealer put on the new set the next year because there was a recall. Those still didn't work came on here and found a post which said keep the wireing harness from the recall set and put back on a set of 06 bars and plug into new harness from recall. Now I only go one maybe two bars on readout and mine are toasty. Do a search for the post, it's quite big, but it worked.

Schroon,

My heaters worked before with the update. I started getting the 81 code three years ago and its just gotten progressively worse. If the ecu doesn't fix it I'll just put a set of aftermarket heated grips and be done with it.

Thanks for the input

My son bought electric gloves with a variable controler wired direct to the battery. He loves them especially after a cold trail stop they're nice and toasty. Just google 12v electric gloves.
