More chaincase problems again!

Has anyone figured out a way to vent air to the chaincase to help cool the oil?

The problem is the oil & gears getting to hot & the oil breaking down & then your done!!!

It needs air ducted to it from under the side of the sled! It looks like it wouldn't be to hard, if you can find a little duct somewhere to use after cutting a hole in the plastic panel! A plastic duct that could be riveted to the plastic panel after you cut the hole would work, I think!!

It also would move a little more air to the radiator too!

With the engine oil tank, the chaincase & the radiator all there in that little spot, its alot of heat in 1 location!

What do you guys think??

IMO, when you look at how other gear systems are cooled, they usually pass coolant through the gearbox. I think if you could put a hard line through the gear box and pass coolant through it, that would be the way to do it.
I however, think you should look more into a different type of lubricant that will take the heat without breaking down. I'm sure somebody can chome in with a reccomendation there, but there are many products out there that will take the abuse without failure.
Do you ride differently, or have modifications to your sled that is making ,pre stress on your gearbox? If that is you on your avitar, at least that doesn't look like your sled is hauling around a "big guy"! LOL LOL

We ride lots of RR beds & roads at 80-100 mph & have for many years, but this year we're having problems, way too many problems & it needs to be fixed!!

I think this can be done finding the right part to duct a little air in to the case!

I am 225 with gear at 5' 10". I want your diet plan!!! LOL LOL!!!
If you drill a small hole in the top of the chaincase, you could use a vent from a truck axle?
Any air you try to put into the case, you'll have to be sure it stays clean, which would be a pain. I vote for the breather and the best oil you can buy. I haven't heard of too many problems like this and a lot of guys ride these things as hard as you do without failure. I can't imagine it to take too much to make it withstand the abuse.

Do you have the 07 chaincase cover?

I ask because this update resolved my issues.

Concur,

Get your chain-case cover updated. The new chain-case cover has a square shoulder that supports the chain-case seal better.

In addition,

Take the chain-case dip stick out. Look at the chain-case rubber dip stick cap. On the inside of the cap there are vertical rectangular grooves cut into the beveled rubber rings to vent air.

The rectangular grooves are cut into the rubber rings on opposite sides to prevent oil from blowing out however, allows air to vent.

The rubber grooves can be widened slightly by carefully using a sharp knife, razor blade, or dremel tool. Slightly widen the vertical air vent grooves only, or you will start blowing chain-case oil through the dipstick cap.

The asymmetrical design of the beveled rubber rings keeps the oil from escaping out the air vent grooves.

Proper dip stick air venting will help the overall situation you are referring to.

Use some good synthetic chain case oil to prevent breakdown of oil.. I've been using Amsoil chaincase oil since updating to 23T top gear, 2,400 miles and no problems so far. It would be a good idea to change chaincase oil annually since we don't have a magnet in our cases...

I'm using Quaker State full Syn. 75w - 140 and performing great...also did the DIPSTICK thing extra venting as "HONDO" explained, 10.000kms so far no problems.

You should also change your oil frequently, for the little bit it cost considering the cost of a chain case failure$$$ and down time (shame) oil is cheap...
 
The easiest way to drop the temperature of your chaincase would probably be to install an 05 chaincase assembly.

Aluminum conducts quite a bit better than magnesium and the aluminum/aluminum interface between the chaincase to the tunnel will draw the heat into the tunnel quickly with an aluminum case.

The 05 case only weighs about 1 lb more and other than being aluminum, its virtually identical (direct bolt in).

The 05 case also has very good geometry for the seal so I wouldn't expect any leaks with one (never heard of any leaking either).
 
Do a search on Snowest.com for "ported chaincase".

Be ready for some good laughs, and a lot of wasted time . . .
 
If I'm not mistaken, when I was under the sled reinstalling the skid, I thought I saw a hole in the bulkhead right next to where the chaincase is? I'll have to look again. Maybe some kind of air vent along the side panel?
 
I installed synthetic 75/90 gear oil in my sled at the begginning of the year and no issues at all.. 4300 miles
