Been noticing that when I run hard through the snow or it even happened last weekend on the airport (1200' runs) I get a very pronounced oder of oil. Not seeing any leakage from the chaincase or in the engine compartment either. The chaincase fluid stays within range and engine oil is finr too? Opened up the air box and it does not seem to be accummulating any noticable quanity of oil in there either. Will the vent tube in the airbox emitt such a smell on hard runs?????

I noticed this last year after my dealer changed my oil and filter. I thought maybe he spilled some under the hood. I have since changed my oil myself and haven't noticed any smell since last year. Just like you I was checking everything including the airbox hoping to find the source of the smell but never did.

What kind of oil do you smell? Engine oil and gear oil have distinctly different smells.

When you're running very high speeds for a prolong time the chaincase gets extremely hot and tends to let off that hot oil smell, after a long high speed run just touch the chaincase and you wont beleive how hot it gets, just throw a bit of snow on it and watch it vaporize, '06 seems worse because of the famous magneseum casing. I've seen some almost boiling after a long lake run...
If you want me .02, make sure you're using a good quality oil "Syn" if possible and change it on a regular base.

I'm using a full synthetic chaincase oil, I can get it to smell after a couple of hard pulls of 1200' or so. My guess is that it smells like hot gear lube. What I need to do is stop as soon as the odor is noticable and remove the hood and the PITA side panel so I can verify that it is indeed chainlube that I'm smelling. Ready-access was not a design criteria for this chassis. I have changed the lube 3 times so far in the 3200 miles that I have on the chassis. Twice at the same time as my oil changes, and once when I replaced the track and front drivers. Thanks for the input!

I have that smell two with 75-90Syn gear lube... seems to be normal. I haven't noticed it lately though.

This is initeresting. I changed my track due to loosing clip's and had my drive shaft checked, Found the drive shaft bent .008 on the splined end. I replaced my gear oil with 75-90 synthetic. When i was riding this last weekend and made a couple hard run's across the lake's i could smell gear oil but did not find any leak's and oil level stayed perfict. I never noticed this before i put the synthetic in. WTF!! I would think the case has to breath and would put out some oder, Maybe the synthetic has a stronger oder when warm? kviper

i never noticed any smell with the yamaha chain case oil but when i changed to synthetic gear lube i get a smell all the time when running hard, run about 100 miles the other day and about 50 miles of rrbed,60-100 plus mph,no leaks found on my 06rtx without reverse but boy it sure smells,i might have over filled it a hair but nothing coming out anywhere,i think its just the difference in oil,a bottle of yamaha chaincase oil doesnt have a smell hardly at all compared to the synthetic gear lube
