There have been several posts on this topic but I have not seen any post in which anyone has said they had used the 05 piston rings in an 03 RX1 engine and was successful in eliminating the oil consumption. I am getting ready to order the parts and rering the engine with the 05 rings but want to hear from folks who have done it. No sense in doing this work if it has been shown to not solve the problem. My 03 RX-1 has 8200 miles. It had been consuming approximately 1 quart per 1200 miles but recently has increased to 1 quart in about 600 miles. I have read several posts in the Apex forum which some Apex owners report excessive oil consumption as well. I would be satisfied with an oil consumption rate of 1 quart per 150o-1600 miles.

I am sure it would cure the problem but I would talk to your dealer to make sure. You could also talk to an engine rebuilder as well. Both my 04 and 05 used no oil all winter.

Hello Sled Dog,

My dealer is totally worthless, the technical staff is not capable of repairing a lawn mower. The knowledge base of this forum far exceeds any single dealer or group of dealers. I am fairly confident the installation of the 05 rings will reduce/eliminate the oil consumption but would like to hear from members who have actually done it.

Lakercr is the only one I know that may have done this kind of a job. I think he has a detailed how to for taking apart and rebuilding these engines. Good luck and please post how it goes for you. Do you have the shop manual?

Yes, you are correct, Lakecr is very knowledgeable on this engine. I will definitely contact him for his advice.

A guy by the name of Black john has done many ring jobs too. I remember reading his posts about it giving lots of details.
