Rex.......I had read somewhere where someone last lost a motor because the rod bolt/nut had backed out.....I will be interested in knowing if you lost the rod nut or if the rod broke....
Ps: That sucks!
also I would like to know the vin on your sled....to see if your build date is close mine.....
I'm still on the fence about pulling it apart but right now I don't think I have a choice....

Rex,
Sorry to hear about the problems with your sled. I'm surprised at that kind of failure. It will probably be hard to tell exactly what caused it.
Regarding the 05 piston rings solving the problem, I don't think so. There have been a number of people on this site talking about their 05 RX-1's using oil also. I think the real fix is as Skydog said, the engines are running too cool with an operating temp of 150-160F. I'd like to try running a 180F thermostat after cleaning the engine up on the Yamaha ring-free shock treatment. I do agree with everyone, burning oil in these engines really does suck. One of the primary reasons I bought my 03 RX1 was to get away from burning oil!!!!

ReX, man that sucks!! Very sorry to hear that news. I hope it doesn't cost too much to get it back together again. Do you have an extended warranty on it?

That engine was already rebuilt if I am correct. Take it back to who rebuilt it.

I tried to buy an extended warranty, but due to a very annoying situation I was not able to.
I am hoping Yamaha will be willing to help me out considering the situation.
Cost wise it pretty much needs an entire new motor. The engine block, crank, connecting rods, pistons, and rings need replacing.
Apparently up here a new motor from Yamaha goes for about $8000 Cdn plus taxes or $9200 total. I don't think that includes installation.
I've done a little searching for a used motor and haven't found any 05's yet. 03's and 04's seem to be going for anywhere between $2000 and $3600 US. I haven't found any locally.
Man this sucks!!! It was annoying enough to be burning a quart per 1000 miles, but this is much, much worse.
To add salt to the wound I got a $325 speeding ticket 2 miles before the motor blew up. 120 kph (75 mph) on a wide smooth, snow covered river. I wasn't aware there was a 70 kph (44 mph) speed limit on rivers in Quebec and was cruising along. The cops told us any more than 100 kph (60 mph) and they ticket so I was riding at 100 kph when the motor blew. Then it cost close to $400 to rent a truck and get back home.
On top of that a little piece of metal that helps support the plastic ramp sliders on the secondary clutch fatigued and fell off on Friday. It cost just under $700 for a new secondary in Gaspe that day.
The sledding holiday was truly going great until the problems with the sled. We were riding about 12 hours and 500-650 kms per day and rode some of the most interesting trails I've ever experienced. We rode from west of Ottawa through to Lac St. Jean, up the north shore to Baie Comeau, across by ferry to Matane (the ferry got stuck in the 1-2 feet thick ice several times - interesting experience - the ferry was an ice breaker), semi-diagonally across Gaspesie through the mountains (on the new trail), around the coastline stopping at Perce Rock and Gaspe and then following the 5 to Quebec City, crossing the St. Laurence by a truck service, and then to Shawinigan. The motor failed at Shawinigan yesterday as we were leaving in the morning.

The engine is all original and 100% stock. It's never been wrenched on, other than to have the PTO seal changed (and of course oil changes).

Did you stay at Bernard's in Shawinigan? If so he will tell EVERYONE that an RX-1 blew a motor and that they are ALL blwing motors now. I saw two Mach Z's blown up while I was there this year.

Ok I am getting you confused with someone else here who had lots of oil burning issues and dealer problems to the point where I thought Yamaha stepped in and rebuilt the engine.

We didn't stay there. They were booked solid that night. I did call him to help arrange transportation home and did tell him about my engine...
In the end we managed to get a u-haul and as we were picking it up Bernard came through with a truck, trailer, and driver option to take us home (400+ kms each way and a little cheaper than the u-haul). I was very impressed that he was willing and able to help us out - especially since we hadn't stayed there this season. I felt bad having to tell him thanks, but we were in the process of picking up a rental truck we found (the lady running the local u-haul drove in from her house to open the u-haul dealership for us - again great friendly service).
For anyone looking for a place to stay in Shawinigan I recommend Bernard's Motel Safari. He goes the extra mile to make your stay go smoothly. Here is a link:

Thanks for all the words of support/sympathy.
I've just been searching the web looking for 05 RX-1's with similar problems and so far I've only found one. This really looks like a rare problem in 05's for a stock motor.
I found some guys with over 25,000 kms on their 05's in Quebec and no problems there (not even burning oil). They even lake/river race on a regular basis.
I'm really scratching my head trying to figure out why this thing let go. I might ride hard, but I'm absolutely meticulous when it comes to maintenance, lubricants and filters.
It's never even blown a belt and had the engine overrev. RPMs this season have always been under 10,300 and the motor is 100% stock. Last season there was a short ride or two where it hit 10,700 when the PTO seal leaked oil on the clutches but that was last season.
I also haven't been able to find any other 05's that are burning oil - at least not anywhere near what mine was burning. I also know a few guys running high revving clutch kits (10,500-10,700) with filters, jetting, etc. and no problems with as many miles.
The other thing I can't figure out is why the engine worked so well last season (didn't burn any oil - as long as the crankcase breather wasn't frozen) and this season right off the bat it was burning oil and it didn't stop.
I wonder what day of the week my sled was built...
I just got off the phone with my wife (she's away on a business trip for a couple of days) and it went something like this after I told her about the motor:
her: so your telling me after spending over $20,000 in the past year on that sled it's going to need a new motor costing between $5000 (used) and $10,000 (new) and you just spent $700 on the clutch while on holiday.
me: err.... yes something like that...
her: what about the bathroom renovation?; what about the office in the basement?
me: maybe we can get it fixed as well...
her: take out a bank loan to fix a 1 year old snowmobile that's supposed to have an engine good for twice that mileage!! I don't think so. (that was how I sold her on the sled - the durability of the motor...)
The conversation went on a little longer, but I might end up with a mint looking 2005 RX-1 that's actually a 600 lb boat anchor... There's not a scratch or dent on it anywhere.

Now if I were a sled manufacturer, I would really want my dyno lab guys to have a look at this motor, especially if it's a rare problem and 20,000 KM's old. A lot can be learned from it. That said, your probably gonna be ignored because you are north of the border. I'm not saying they should cover it, just that I'd be interested in seeing it if it were me running the show.

I have to agree you would have much more better luck getting coverage south of the 60th parallel.
