I was speaking to a very highly respected gentleman with a vast knowledge of RX-1 and Apex turbos. I asked him about doing the rider forward mod on the RX-1 mountain.
He said, it is an awful lot of work, and you can get nearly the same riding position by just installing the steering riser assembly from the Vector Mountain.
Huh?
So I went to the Yamaha parts site and looked at what would be required to do the mod. It looks like it would cost just under $100 to do this modification.
It looks like a great way to go to me.
I'm going to try to stop by the dealer on the way home tonight and take a peak at the Vector Mountain they have on floor.
Has anyone else tried this setup on their RX-1M?

Interesting. I would love to hear what people think. I have an 06 vector and have been considering rider forward.

I tried to post the picture of the drawing from the Yamaha parts site but it printed a generic page so I deleted it quickly.
But yes, after looking at the drawing I think it might just be the ticket.

that's not true
The steering post is at the same place, then, even if your handlebar are more forward, you will put effort on the mass of the sled at the same place than before. The sled wont respond well.
And with the Wildchild kit, its a straight forward task, easy and it took me 3 hours without stress.
I bet it will be almost the same price to do than Buy Genuine Yamaha part.

I don't understand the "awful lot of work" comment. It took me maybe 2 hours and that was the fabricating and welding too. Not hard!

In order to acheive rider forward the stering column has to move because in the end thats where the bars contact the deltabox no matter what kind of riser you put on

Perhaps this gentleman merely wanted to sell me parts?
I did get a chance to go and look at a Vector SE after work tonight. I was rather impressed with how well the sled sat compared to the older RX-1s in the showroom. No it wasn't as far froward as the Apex but it certainly was head and shoulders better than the stock RX-1 Mountain.
If it only takes two hours maybe it's worth the trouble (if I had a welder available).
Are the cables and brake lines long enough? I have an 05 RX-1M throttle cable now with my 2" bar riser.
Thanks

It actually gives you more cable and brake line leaning it forward. It's easy Lee. Get your two pieces of metal at the right angle to take to the welder by bending a flat bar or sheet metal for a jig and take it to someone to weld. You also need to cut your steering column and have them weld a piece of pipe inside it to raise it up 3-4 inches. You need at least like 2" to clear the instrument cluster. Another option is to just get a hold of Wildchild and buy his kit!

you can also buy a Kit already made like i do. No welding required. and 195 $ can i paid for.
Like Rx!m5 said, even if the bar is 7 inch forward, the place where the steering connect on the deltabox is the same. This is exactly that place you need to bring forward

I emailed wildchild to get info on his kit. Probably the way to go.

I tried to pull up Wildchild's website a week ago but it didn't seem to work.
Yes, if there's a no welding required kit I'm all for it.
However, I am still amazed how well the Vector SE steering ergonomics felt to me.

Your "very highly respected gentleman" is either trying to steer you another way intentionally or he really doesn't know what he is talking about. It is not alot of work, Wildchilds kit is bolt in and top notch, and the "new" Vector Mtns steering column is in the same place as the RX1s. It just has an aluminum riser on it that puts you even farther back because of the angle its raked back at. Do you understand this? Heres his website. http://www.ccmachines.com/

Yes, if I could order a Wildchild bolt in kit I would.
It sure sounds like the way to go.
