I'm thinking of opening up every 3rd window up on my track and not clipping it...has anyone tried this and if yes what are your results.

I think by doing this it would cut down on friction, rubber on plastic = HEAT wich melt down HYFAX/SLIDES and the 2nd reason, it would let more snow dust and air up thru the open holes to cool slides.

Just a tought, I'm no Engineer or Scientist but I think that it might help, 'cause my buddy wich rides the same sled as me "FULLY" clipped his and seems to run cooler, I just tought before going fully clipped maybe just opening up the holes to create more flow thru and saving a bit of famous WEIGHT.

Merry Summer guy's :-o

I ended up drilling 1 inch holes using a holesaw on all the closed windows of my track before my season began. Looking at the track after a season of riding, I have seen no noticeable wear or damage to the track due to these holes being drilled.

Like you, I thought the same, that it would decrease slider wear, although I have no basis for comparison, as I had never rode it before drilling out the windows. I did however, go through 3 sets of sliders in about 2000km. I was surely not impressed with this at all.

I would feel that cutting the track windows out and clipping them would be the better route to take.

This spring, I installed a couple extra idler wheels nearer to the back of the suspension, as well as went with 1/4 inch larger wheels in hopes of taking more friction off of the sliders.

I opened mine with a razor knife. It was suggested on a prior post here to heat the blade first, but for me it worked better without the heat. The suspension doesn't seem to hold as much snow and the hifax seem to wear better. I do plan on fully clipping the track this summer.

I'm in the process of extending and putting a 128" fully clipped and open 1 1/4 ripsaw on. I also took the painted suspension parts to get them Aluminumized, so no more rusty skid. Parts should be done this week sometime and I will post pictures of them. Also putting the fat boy spring in too.

I use a Stanley knife when cutting out the closed windows of my tracks. I do use some oil which I dip the Stanley knife blade into before I make a cut, it cuts like the rubber was made of butter.

I do not think that cutting out closed windows in the track and clipping it is going to help much on slider wear, not to my experience that is. On the turbo my first set of sliders lasted only 140 kms, this was with all windows open and track fully clipped, it was early seson riding when snow conditions were poor. To replace the stock sliders I did buy a set of Hyperfax sliders which I rode until the end of season putting on 1700 kms without any wear at all. I can not tell by looking at it. My take on stock hyfax wear is that it is melting and causeing severe wear every time slider temps reach melting point. Hyperfax can take more than 700 F before melting. Stock slider can only take about 350 F before melting.
