'08 40th. Anniversary Nytro RTX
I'm just in the process of buttoning up the Nytro after replacing the donuts with copper. As a matter of precaution, I decided to fire it up before I reassembled everything and I have a fair amount of smoke coming out from around the heat shield under the fuel tank. I did put Copper anti-seize on the clamps around the donuts and i'm sure there is residual penetrating oil from removal but my main concern is the heat shield itself. about 1/4 of the Asbestos padding has worn to nothing and I don't know what is acceptable. I've seen other postings with pics that are way worse than mine. Can the asbestos be replaced or the whole shield? It figures, this kind of issue always pops up after the dealer has closed for the weekend! Any opinions would help.

I looked around 4 a suitable replacement and in the end I used the heatshield from Royal...Just scrape the old stuff off and stick the new stuff on...Time will tell whether or not it will hold up.

Moose racing makes some adhesive heat tape that can be used on the heat shield. Its really cheap & works great.

Thanks Edge, I put it back together the way it is. Here's hoping! After running it around a bit the smoking stopped. I'm pretty sure it was some of the residual oils burning off the exhaust.

Mine had a stink for the first few start ups, I would let you know if it goes away but it's -30 and sunny one day and +5 and rain the next around here.
