HELP!! How to get at the tie rod for steering in XTC 700 ?

HELP !

My son hit a tree (he is OK just temporarily STUPID) with the 98 XTC.

I have everything back to straight to my eye and a straight edge. Yet I can not figure out why the Left ski is so toed out on that side. I moved the connecting peice on top of the spindle 1 spline in and then can just align the ski's .

But the steering is off an annoying inch from center. There is a tie rod from the steering post to the plate with tie rods connected - nothing bent here. I can not get to the bolt closest to the steering post, on the steering tie rod, under the motor to loosen.


Any way to get that loose so can adjust steering with out removing the engine?

Any chance the spindle itself is twisted slightly, does that happen and if so how could I tell?

Boy I hope there is a stupid thing I am missing here. Looks like a lot of work to adjust the handle bar.

In my past experience I have always been able to center the handle bars on all my Yamaha's just by turning the rod ends at the spindle's.

Of course you need to take the bolt all of the way out so that you can spin the rod ends full revolutions, but assuming that you have enough threads to work with it is a lot easier than accessing the rod ends under the engine.

check your spindle on the side that hit.its more than likely twisted.take it out to check it.Shane

Blue Dave - that was my first thought as well, I tried just adjusting the the tie rod ends with handle bars straight, it leaves to little thread for me to feel safe.


Srxpert I was wondering if those could twist. Does that- twisted spindle- happen often? and still look square. How can I tell once i get it out with nothing to compare to?
Is there some mark that should be straight ahead or 90 degrees?

O.K. I'm going to admit my ignorance here, XTC? What sled is this? I assume a Yamaha, but I'm thinking Poo. Maybe I'm confusing XCR and XTC. I know on my Poo Trailing arm sled there is one larger flat spline on the spindle that is used to line things up.

LJ 452 an XTC was Yamaha's Trail version of the SX in the 90's came in 5,6 & 700 cc versions. This is a trailing arm front suspension, Proaction rear suspension 700 cc tripple two stroke this one happens to be a Deluxe with reverse, mirrors. I love this sled and can not part with it, well over 11,000 miles Runs strong.

O.K. thanks for the answer, If it's anything like the Viper front end, I thought that there was an arrow/carrot stamped on top of the spindle as to were the clamp should locate.

Once you pull the spindle our of the trailing arm you will see the twist,its pretty easy to see.I worked at a couple of different yamaha dealerships and have only seen it 2 or 3 times.Yamaha did have updated spindles for the pro-action chassis back around 1998 or 99.when you put the spindle back on the arm make sure you line up the dot on the spindle with the cut line in the arm.if you have any questions you can call me at 715-304-9393.Shane
