How can I Test if my Spark plug Coils are still good

should be a ohm measurement for the coils. I do not have the measurement but call your dealer and ask for it or take them to the dealer and have them measure them for you.

My guess is your coils are good............... if you are all stock...

I took the rubber boots off, and put back on plugs and started in a dark garage. You could see spark jumping to the head at idle, not good.

The 03 coils are actually fine. it is the connection to the spark plug which is the source of the problem.. The arcing is caused by the fine metal dust caused from the coil contact vibrating on the spark plug tip. Rather than replacing the coils, unplug them, take the rubber cap off of both ends and clean the rubber components with hot soap and water. This will get the metallic dust off of them. Blow out the end of the coil where it connects to the spark plug and clean the spark plug well out. I blow the plug well out with compressed air and wipe it out with a rag and solvent. Put a small amount of dielectric grease on the rubber cap which slips over the plug and you'll be good for an entire season of riding. Clean these components and install plugs once a year and you should be fine. I'd ratehr do this once or even twice a season than spend a few hundred $ on new coils. Just my opinion.

From the 03 service manual:

Primary coil resistance: .16-.22 ohm at 20C (68F). Measure the primary coil by connecting a meter lead to each connector at the top of the coil.

Secondary coil resistance: 5.0-6.8k ohm at 20C. Diagram shows meter leads connected between a top connector, and where the coil fits on the spark plug.

Two of my 2003 coils are pretty loose at the connection to the spark plugs, even with new plugs. I wrapped some fine copper wire around the threads of new spark plug as a temporary fix. I bought some used coils off ebay, 3 of 4 are good fit according to the seller.

On all of my coils, I can see where they have been arcing about half way up, not at the bottom rubber boot. Three of four are loose at the top where they fit on the cylinder head cover. I put 2 wraps of electrical tape under the top rubber cap, they fit tight now. Others have used o-rings under the top rubber cap.

I'm not certain that removing the top rubber boot and starting the machine in a dark place is a good way to test for arcing. Probably better to examine for coil for signs of arcing. With the top boot removed, the coils are very loose in the head cover, so arcing to the head might occur, when it didn't with the boot installed.

I also wonder if removing the plastic sleeve that covers the middle of the coil stick and taping with electrial tape would be better than the sleeve. There is about a 1mm gap in the sleeve exposing the bare metal.

Late last year, I had a lightshow on 3 of the 4 coils in my 04 RX1. Dealer replaced them under the extended warranty.

Also, no one has mentioned that he needs to look at the end of the spark plugs. Sometimes they burn off too.
