I have read here on several posts that the 03 spark plug coils have been updated due to arcing problems. I understand how we are to check them: by taking the rubber cap off of the top, firing up the sled in the dark and looking for arcing. My question is do we know for sure that the coils go bad and result in this arcing or is the arcing caused by the metallic dust generated due to the wear on the spark plug connector tips? Has anyone looked for arcing after completely cleaning the coil, plug and plug well? If they do arc after a complete cleaning, where do they arc from on the coil? I am thinking this arcing could be fixed by adding 2 or 3 layers of insulating shrinkable tubing on the coil body. If mine show any arcing after giving everything a good cleaning I'm going to try the added insulation. This would sure be a lot cheaper than buying new coils. Even the new, updated coils will eventually arc if enough metallic dust is generated.
Thanks and happy sledding!!!

The arching is caused by the poor fitting of the sparkplug into the coil itself….The arching is the flow of electrical current jumping from the coil to the plug…Pull out a coil remove the rubber boot from the bottom of the coil….Take a new plug and just see how poor a grip the coil has on that plug…..All mine are shot….No grip at all…..Yamaha has told me they will not cover it……

Thanks, what is different with the design of the 04 and 05 coils? How did they solve this problem?

my thought is why should I buy a $9,000 snowmobile and have to rig it to make it right. It has more to due with the two pieces of metal holding on to the top of plug not retracting and holding the plug. I cleaned mine and greased plug and still arced

Lippy,
I agree with you 100%. Yamaha should retrofit for free poorly designed components like these. For what it would cost them would be quickly repaid through customer loyalty. The only time manufacturers do a free retrofit is when there is a saftey issue. Their only motivation is to avoid the lawsuits. I'll give you an example of terrific customer service: I bought a used 2003 Volvo. It had a couple of broken plastic parts like the glove box cover and a cup holder. My wife brought it in for a warranty item and not only did they take care of the warranty item but they replaced the broken plastic parts, two small light bulbs and washed and vacuum cleaned the entire car. We she asked how much the bill was they told her zero. I can assure you of which brand of car I'll be buying next and from what dealer.

It will keep arching....I am still working with my selling dealer on my problem with them....But I did come up with a fairly good temporary fix that has worked well for about 350 miles so far....
I soldered up the plug end that goes into the coil......Take some small gauge wire, wrap it as tight as you can around the threads...I then heated with a small soldering (flame type) torch and soldered the crap out of it...After it cooled I used a file (fine) and slowly worked the soldered wire down until it fit nice and snug into the coil...I did each new plug to fit each coil...I also put some GROTE dielectric grease on the plug tip....It is working well...I should have taken a few pics to show.....If anyone wants....tomorrow I can solder up an old plug and take a few pictures...But I am not pulling off a coil until I have to again....

I like your solution. I'll try it. Considering that we should have to change plugs only once per season this should work fine. Thanks!!!!!

i am swithing to ford coils i will need to put the screw on caps over the termanel ends of the spark plugs. these coils even have the same plug termal ends so its plug and play i just have to make up a mount. or drill abd tap the vale cover. these are avlable at any auto parts store for about 100.00-115.00 cdn. from ford there about 175.00. and they have a coil sping that clips over the spark plug.

The coils for a Ford part # is 3W7Z-12029-AA, or Motorcraft part # DG-508. List price is $88.04. I can sell for $51.51 plus 6% sales tax plus shipping. The Yamaha part # looks like it is 8FA-82310-00-00 and sells for $84.82. I'm not sure the Ford coil would work. At the very top of the boot it has about a 15 degree angle to it, also would have to make a bracket to bolt down to. The boot on the Ford coil is replaceable, part # F7TZ-12A402-AA list price $11.90. All prices are U.S. $. PM me if anyone wants to try, I'll ship out same day.
