My first 4 stroke and might be a hard habit to break checking oil before you ride every time in the morning is this over kill?

I do the same thing better safe then sorry.
Every time I ride, I start the sled first thing to warm it up. shut it down for a few while I finish getting ready. Check the oil and go ride.

Are you guys serious?
I check my oil at the most every few weeks, and routinely go over 1000kms between checking the oil level. Generally I'll check it if I think about when I have the plastic off for something else.

i check bout every 500 or 600 km's. super easy to pull off the side to check oil
I would recommend that you resist adding too often. There is a warning light that comes on if it gets low. I have had 5 of these 4 stokes. On the first one, I would always top off and thought I was using a lot of oil. Then, I found that if I held off and only added when I needed to, I used way less overall. Now, I ave one 03 with a ton of miles (10k+), on that I keep a qt in the saddle bags, maybe use a qt/ yr. The newer sleds get it changed before it ever gets down enough to add.
BTW...I also use only AMSOIL 0W40. I fouind the cold starting proprties to be much better, especially during my trips to northern Canada where the temps can be as low as -50C

I would like to say before every ride but I would be lying. I check before a weekend trip and and everytime I have the cover off in the garage. Over the years of having an Apex and two Nytros, change the oil annually and never have had an issue with oil, unless it is rolled on it's side of course LOL!

3rd 4 stroke and i will check before a week long trek so i don't have to add while i'm gone. Unless i put it on its side, i never add oil between oil changes.
Just ride em and go!

I don't add every time I ride, I check every time I ride. My sled does spend a lots of time upside down but with the rov I don't loose much if any. I check it as a security that I don't have a leak or something from the last ride. Pretty easy insurance.[/u]

my 2003 rx1 would shut down, thats when i new it was time to check or should i say add, knock on wood the nytro is always full when checked after every ride
That reminds me, I need to check the oil in both of my sleds. Not really. I've never checked the oil in either of my sleds between changes. My 07 has 8000 miles on it and my 09 has 5500 miles on it. Neither has been low at any end of the year oil change.

thanks for all the input. So to be most accurate does the sled have to be at operating temp. to get a good reading with out the dipstick screwed in?
