Hi!

I guess I am not the first one wondering about this.

Thing is, how fingertight your fingertightness is depends on how strong you are in your fingers and how hard your skin is. It also depends on the tecnique.

Should you try to screw it in as far as you can using all the force you have in your hands?

Oh btw I know that it is important not to let the seal on the screw fool you so I always make sure it`s free.

Today I found out that if I used only the tips of my point-finger and my thumb, I could thread it in until it stopped, if I then changed my grip by letting the head of the screw rest inside my pointing-finger (fold it around the screw) and then use my thumb to support/rotate it, I could rotate the screw probably 3/4 of a turn further.

I might be overdoing it but I`ve used to screw it in until I can get it any further, using some force and feeling some pain in your fingers. Then back it off 1/4 of a turn.

Since I got some chain wining I tried using the tip of my fingers method today to see if it goes away.

As some of you know I have been doing some wrenching in the chaincase on my 2011 Nytro MTX 162 cause I hit a rock and cracked the cover, so I`ve changed the parts that need changing after riding without oil.

I changed the parts last week and went riding this weekend. I think I have some chain wining, it seems to go away when I put load on the chain (throttle) but when I let go off the throttle I hear the typical chain noise. (or atleast what I think is the chain noise) .

Am I overdoing this? I want it to be perfect and sounds can ruin my ride cause I keep worrying :)

Any opinions appreciated!!

:)

My procedure:

Loosen nut and pull seal washer back.
Wipe off and de-grease hex head of bolt, with contact cleaner for instance.
Tighten bolt as tight as I can get it by grabbing the hex head between my thumb and middle finger.
Back off bolt 1/2 turn (which is 1/4 turn more than Yamaha's instructions).
Push seal washer back and tighten nut.

No problems with whining noise, abnormal wear or chains jumping. If I back off the bolt only 1/4 turn (as per Yamaha's instructions), I do get a whining noise.

Hi Alatalo!

Do you use the tip of your fingers or do you bend your pointing-finger over the hex head and then use your thumb to rotate it?

Gees I know this sounds stupid but it does make a difference.

I might have my chain to loose now since I used the finger tip method.. .

hmm:)

Hmm so what is the verdict on the method? finger tips or not ? ;)

I bend my finger if that helps you then back off 1/2 turn ( I do 1/4 turn and most do 1/2 ) Thats just me ;)!

Finger tip is all you need. All you need to do is take up slack that is why finger tip method is used. Your going to cause premature wear by going to tight.

Fingertips but you do have to find the slack spot by moving track a bit back and forth.

OK thanks for the replies!

Would it be best to lift the rear end of the sled while adjusting the chain tension?

I cannot remember doing so at the dealer when I worked there.. .

I guess having a friend jiggle the secondary back and forth whilst tightening the tensioner by hand would make it take upp all the slack.

I will try to see if I can get rid of the sound this weekend, bring the wrenches on the trail and do some testing.

We`ll see:)
