Huge Dissapointment - Won't start - SOLVED

Its flooded from cranking weekly had this happen a few times... Just pull the seat hold it wide open and crank with the fuel pump disconnected.

Let it sit for 5-10 min then plug the pump back in and retry if it won't fire. Then pull the gastank and clean the plugs

Plugs are under the handle bars in front of the gas tank. no need to remove air box.

Take off the seat, and any plastics that you think you need to remove to get the gas tank off. I think its called the gas tank cover? its the one with the key ignition. Then unplug the pump and electrical connection. on the front (engine side) there is a tube that needs to be unplugged. The vent line should be long enough to set the tank beside the sled.

Now you should see the engine. carefully unplug the ignition coils. down there are the spark plugs.

I bet its your plugs brother. I ran my sled for about an hour total just running it around in the fields behind my house then the next day she doesnt fire. cranks forever but it wouldnt fire. So I then put new plugs in and sure enough, it fired right up.

That was the first time I ever seen 4 stroke Yami plugs foul. Oddly enough a week later the plugs fouled on my old mans Apex.

SWAP THE PLUGSSS!!

OK well I am going to pick up set of plugs tomorrow. If they are bad I am not going to tear it apart and stand there and say "hhmmm, wish I had some plugs now that it's apart...".

Could this be caused from old gas/too much cranking?

Lesson learned :o| :o| :o|

PS I have a couple friends/neighbours laughing at this "reliable" 4-stroke, and of course..."Where the hell did you say the plugs are??? Seriously you have to take the gas tank off!!!??" All of their 2-strokes started of course...

Ya. Nobody can deny the "brilliant" engineering on that one... I know bla, bla, bla It's my fault probably but can't deny the fact that a plug change aint like it used to be haha! (it was much easier on my old Phazer!)

Its never happened to me but owning 4st bikes and quads I know that if I start it I must get it fully warm so I dont start it unless I can get it up to temp.Original plugs and over 8000mi on them.

short starts can foul plugs on the 4 strokes - have had it happen to one of the phazers and the AC T660's ... bigger pain to change the plugs in the phazer

The first time I changed mine took me forever. Now I can do it within 20 - 25 or so mins.

I've only seen fouled plugs on an EFI 4 stroke on raptor 700s. A couple buddies and I have them. I haven't had the problem, but I've seen theirs not start. Have fresh gas, spark and not even a fart. The plug didn't even look fouled. Swap the plug and runs like new.

Remember the old Throttlebody Chevys. They sucked at coldweather starting since the ecu didnt know the engine was cranking slow it just kept pouring the gas in.Sequential FI and firing the plug every stroke at startup helped hugely.Good battery, oil and warmups everytime are just something we all have to get used to till sled tech catches up.

SOLVED

Okay it was the plugs.

Phazer starts now better than it has ever started, warm or cold.

I suspect that it had slightly fouled plugs right from the day I bought it, given how good it starts now. Even on a warm fall day when I tore around on the grass it cranked for awhile. Now it fires right up. If it is warm it fires on the 2nd crank of the motor. NICE.

Check them out, they look worse than any fouled plug I had on my old 2-stroke!

Okay, changing the plugs was fine but still insane that you have to remove the gas tank, and a lot of other panels to do it. All in all it took me an hour I suppose.

So I guess the 4-stroke is reliable after all, went out riding with a couple 2-stroke buddies and guess what, one guy had some stalls & clutch problems, other guy had to adjust his carbs & had a belt burning on him...yeah I remember those days.

So now that the Phazer is running, what do we idle at & where do we adjust idle?

Mine idles at 1900 after it is fully warmed up...that seems a bit high? Cold start it idles at 2750 or so...??

Thanks to all for helping out!

up in the front on the left side of the sled sort of behind the arms there is a rubber cap. remove it and there you should see a phillips screw head, that is the adjusting screw.

mine idles at around 1750 when warm, hope that helps!

The adjustment screw is on the left side of the sled when sitting on it down up by the A-arms. Remove the rubber cap and you should be able to get to it with a screw driver from there. I keep my idle arouns 1750. I can engage the reverse by rocking the sled back and forth.

Wow that Search function works.

Thanks!

no problem at all. A guys gota do something while hes at work lol. Glad it was just the plugs nothing else.

Wow those are black and way up on the threads even.I am not going to say everyone should do it since most have no problems with plugs at all but on the Cannondales which came with exact same plug as Phazer we all switched to a 8 size and starting issues went away.To be safe a guy should check the plugs at least once but if I had a problem starting that is what I would do.

I think anyone experiencing long cranking/bad start should look at their plugs.

For how much work it is buy new plugs THEN look at your old ones....

Ya I have never had plugs that black even on my piped Phazer II.
