Been doing some research and I've seen a few different opinions. Seems the general consensus is that it's a good idea to have extra wheels which help wear & tear on the hyfax (sliders - same thing?). Some have said there's a kit available from Yamaha, some have modified skidoo wheels to work, and others swear by the excell kit. I'm not a big fan of maintainance, so I'd sooner head off problems now. After watching a video or two I see changing the hyfax is not a big deal - but if a wheel kit will avoid this problem...
What have you guys got under your machine? Anyone running strictly stock with no problems? How about snow conditions?

Extra wheels def help.
But if you don't like maintainance this is a hobby were bearings not serviced will make for a bad short season.

I have a 2014 and I'm using yamahas oversized wheels. They r identical to the stock wheels and I no longer have problems burning through sliders.

What are the bearings in question? Is it as simple as a grease gun, or are we talking disassembly here?

Jack shaft, drive shaft, all skid wheels. What are the bearings in question? Is it as simple as a grease gun, or are we talking disassembly here?
You have to remove outer bearing seal spray out with parts cleaner then re-grease by hand.
Drive shaft bearing takes a beating and if it goes on trail your done, if you were closer I'd help ya.

DuPont slides! Several people have them and removed their skid wheels without much issue. My stock wheels don't even touch with them on lol. And didn't wear down a lot in 1000 miles

I thought about Dupont but the real problem lies in the smaller wheels Yamaha went with. When you put new slides on with the stock wheels the skid wont even roll on the floor because the wheels are too small so right off the bat it wears down a few mm. At this point i addressed the root of the problem.
I put on the replacement skidoo wheels with the replacable bearings and be set. add an extra set with a mount from a skidoo and buy the $2 in hardware. Put a cheapo set of replacments on for $20, over 2000 miles and they have not moved in wear after the first 500ish miles. Shows at 50-70% left depending on where on the skid you look. The worst part is right below the rear mounting point were there is not any wheels. I am going to add a set here and this should solve the problem.

Point of my post was the duponts are thicker than factory, also the wear on them was minimal at best with factory wheels. Eliminating pressure and maintainance on wheels and bearings. As I said my dealer has many not even running the idler wheels with duponts and having little wear.

Ive just seen many Yamaha sleds burn through slides and many on forums mention Dupont not working. To run w/o idler wheels on just slides its got to be in pure powder conditions or something because many trails I ride are not optimal and that sounds like a recipe for disaster. Not sayings its impossible but the larger wheels are cheap easy insurance.Point of my post was the duponts are thicker than factory, also the wear on them was minimal at best with factory wheels. I did some calcs and in theory the bearings should last a very long time. The problem is contamination since in reality these bearings should last 15 straight years of running 100mph under a 500lbf axial load. For the $25 i just change all mine anyways.

Appreciate the replies. Seems to me the Yamaha / skidoo parts are a cheaper way to go, but the excell kit is the simplest way to go. Agreed? I'm leaning that way, just for ease of initial installation and bearing replacement in the future.

Something else occurred to me as I read through the replies again. Larger wheels = more weight on wheels = more wear on wheels & bearings. Smaller wheels = more weight on sliders = faster wear & replacement of sliders. There's no way around the fact that something is going to wear. If we got some snow to stick around I wouldn't even be thinking about this stuff...

You can use the stock yamaha wheel mounts with excell wheels in many pre-drilled spots already in the skid. The excell wheels are actually lighter, yet stronger than the doo and yam wheels, and the bearings are cheaper and easier to get pre-packed and sealed in sub-zero grease

skidoo ones use a wider stronger bearing though. all I did was make some aluminum spacers to fill in the difference behind the larger washer and was all set. However either option will work great.
