I bought my 05 RX1 from a TY member in the spring of last year. I was done with two strokes, I had all the ash trays that I needed and I don't even smoke. To be fair, I never had a problem with the two strokes until I started to mod and then it all went down hill. Any how after reading on this site I wanted an Attack but did not have the budget for it. My next best choice was an 05 RX1. Mine was very clean with 1100 miles. This guy had CPR air filters, and clutching on it, but removed it to sell it. The part that worried me was he said it did not make that much difference from stock. I was concerned with the performance; my last couple sleds were 170 + hp and did not want a pig for performance. After some more time on TY I decided to buy a kit from Ted Jennetty. I bought his air box mod, carb springs and jetting and clutching. The belt was shot on the sled so I replaced it with a new Yamaha, .and I set the belt deflection. I bought a polished rear bumper and exhaust caps and that is all I have done to it.
I have a towing company so I don't get to go as much as I would like. My first ride was a couple weeks ago. I was very happy with the sled except for darting and the ride. Skid bottoms allot, I will work on that over the summer. I raced a few sleds (ported and BB SRX’s) in our group and did very well, but didn't find any others to run. I did loose to a BB Crank Shop motor with a light weight girl on it. She has been kicking my butt for years so I am use to it.
This weekend I had the pleasure of taking my 16 year old daughter and my 13 year old son on the trails for there first time. My daughter rode a 2000 MXZ 700 that is ported and piped and my son rode a friends 2001 ZR600. We rode from Harrison MI to Houghton Lake and back. The weather was warm and the trails were shot before the end of the day but I am still glad that we got to go. When we got to Houghton Lake I was surprised to see a few other sleds on the lake with it being so warm. I started to get excited thinking I might get to run some sleds. The kids were hungry so we headed down to a restaurant. On the way we run into a couple sleds running each other. One was a F7. I pulled up and we touched them off and I drove away like he was a F5. I was very surprised. When eating lunch we were talking to a couple guys, one with a ZR 800 EFI and the other with a Storm. After finding out if they liked to race I found my self on the lake lining up with them. Same thing with these sleds. The storm was jetted way rich and not running right and I pulled away from the ZR 800 very hard. After lunch we run into anther group of sleds. One ZR800, one new old stock 05 ZR 900, a ZR 580 on two Xc 700's. The ZR 800 lined up with me and it was not a race. We went from a stop and roll and I think I could have pulled a plug and still came out on top. On the way back I seen a Apex, the guy was looking at me so I waved him over. He thought I was a friend and came over. I really wanted to run him to see how much faster the Apex was then my sled. We did two roll on’s and my sled again drove away with no problems. On the way back I let him take off first and could run him down at a very quick pace. I tried to get the ZR 900 to run me but he said it was no use after seeing mine run.
Now here is the disclaimer, it was a very warm day and the two strokes are going to be down on power but I still run the EFI Apex and did very good.. So I am very happy with how she runs. On the way back we switched the sleds all around. I rode both the doo and the zr. They are both nice sleds and run very well. The thing I noticed the most between the two strokes and mine is in the soft snow with 6-10 inches of slush at times, was that the two strokes were really lugging down in the slush. When I got back on my sled I really loved how quite and smooth my sled was, but the big thing I noticed was that the motor did not lug down like the two strokes. It didn't even know that there was 6-10 inches of slush out there. That made riding in bad trails much more enjoyable.
I did put a set of CA Pros on my sled and it did not dart at all but they turn very hard at stop and slow speeds. Any how I still need to make some changes on my sled, it is not perfect but I definitely like this sled. Sure hope I get to ride it more next year!

I don't think it's strong so much as the 05 RX was the greatest sled ever built...it just needed a new seat

*Note..I'm NOT being sarcastic lol. I too LOVE my RX.

Sorry the 03 RX1 was the greatest sled ever built LOL for some reason the 03's run stronger than the 04, or 05's at least thats been my experience. Your right about the 05 seat though I like the wider 03 seat just needs a little more padding

LOL actually I put the first 2500 miles on the 05 while she rode my 03. The next season i took the 03 back and gave her the 05 didn't like the seat : ) Besides i had the 03 setup just right put a lot of time and effort into getting it that way after clutching and ECP the stock 05 just did'nt compare and it was too much work to swap all the parts out (call me lazy) My 03 runs neck and neck with most of the Apex's on top end 8500 miles and strong as ever

Very nice post Bruce!
I also have an 05 RX1, and have bumped the c-clip on the rear shock to the 3rd clip. Doesn't bottom now, and I am 240 without gear. Yamaha dealers can do this in 10-15 minutes.
