Ice Build Up on Rail Tips

So this is a new one for me. I’m getting some weird AF ice build up on my rail tips. Makes a huge ice ball. To the point where my drivers touch it and the inner track knobs touch it. It caused a very unhealthy vibration. It’s happened to me on and off all winter. Just never thought too look there. Also noticed some wear on my drivers. Just couldn’t fathom what could have got them there. Until now.

My vibration was very noticeable from 45-70 MPH. Smooth after 80MPH.

I’m going to examine it a but further once the snow melts. But I think Teflon spray is in order.

Never thought to look for ice build up there. Will check next winter. My rail tips are just HAMMERED looking, wore down like hifax. Would not ever think this would be a wear item. Winder has almost 6000 miles. Anyone else have this happen ?

Looks like you are using aftermarket "introvert" only drivers. I suspect that without the "extrovert" knob the rail tip now has lots of room for ice buildup from snow through the track windows. The ice probably only builds up under certain temp/snow conditions.
I have not seen this on any of my sleds running extroverts.

Yes, ski mounted cable type. Only when needed.

Trying to learn ... why would rail tip be further up without extrovert tooth?

The distance between the drivers and rail tips is tighter with the extrovert knobs then if there were no knobs at all.
On the old Pro Action SXs and SRXs if you installed extroverts the knobs would actually rub on rail tips depending on the extrovert drivers size.

Please explain. Why would the scratchers effect the rail tips ? Stock sled, with stock extrovert drivers. I have no ice build up as the pictures above show. Now back of the tunnel at -10 is another story.

Just carry a small rubber mallet and knock of when it bothers you, its winter, it’s cold, or put 12v heaters on rails, Yamahas didn’t come with those drivers I believe.

I'm thinking the fine snow dust introduced to the front of the skid by the OP's ski mounted scratchers in low snow conditions melts on to the tips of the rails.

Been seeing some unusual ice build up the past couple seasons.
Heat exchanger bridging, tunnel build up, icing on the foot wells, ect.
This comes from pancake smooth trails for long distances.
Chances are you will not see this build up on rough trails.
We now carry a mallet, use when needed, and praise the clubs for keeping the trails in such Great shape.

Probably due to climate change at least here in the great white north. Seems to be the reason for everything these days
