When should stock 12 Apex clutch engage. Mine seems to engage at around 4k Rpms. It makes my track spin like a son of a B. Mostly notice it when getting the sled moving. And around turns in the trail. I have to slow down in the turns unroll my new carbides get here.
Not sure if it's the throttle just touchy as hell. It's either idling or just touch the throttle and it's off like a raped ape! Is this typical of my sled? It' kind of a pain in the butt. Is this typical of the apex?

I installed a ulmer kit in my 06gt and my engagement went up 1000 rpm. Iv gotten a few hundred clicks on er now and have simply just gotten used to it. Takes a bit but im totally used to mine and can creep away with the best of em. Give it some time.

The barnofparts clutch spring is very nice. Reverse works even better not as abrupt. Your sled should engage around 3400 rpm. If you bought the sled new I would check the clutches for sticking. If you bought it used I would verify that that clutching is stock.
I installed a clutch kit in my 04 RX and that took the engagement to 4500 rpm and just didn't work for my use.

Anyway I can tell if it's stock clutching? Do I have to take it apart?

There should be paint marks on the primary spring that you can verify.
The primary cover comes off easily. 6-10 mm bolts. You don't need to pull the clutch. Just be careful because of the spring and when reassembling you will see an x on the primary cover and the spider just line them backup when bolting it back together.

4k rpms seems high for stock.

they do engage high and I switched to a clutch kit that had the softer engagement primary and it is a lot smoother now. Barn of parts also has the soft engagement spring only which is probably all you need.

How much of a job is it to replace the stock clutch spring with a new one? I am not completely inept, but have never done any work on sleds before.

elton buss above covered how to remove the primary cover and access the spring. very easy
just make sure when you put the cover back after you align the X's that you tighten the bolts up evenly so you don't mess up your bushing. not sure of the torque figures for those 10mm bolts, i just make sure they are good and tight and i only use a 1/4 ratchet to avoid breaking something. also make sure you only turn the clutch or motor counter clockwise.

Do I have to remove the belt when I replace the spring or not? I watched an install video of the ulmer clutch kit, which obviously does more than replace just the spring, but they start that video by removing the belt. Just curious. I ordered the spring. Should be fun!

no you don't have to remove the belt to replace the primary spring. it's easy to remove anyways but that's up to you. be a good time to inspect it if you remove it

I probably will check the belt, I would rather do it once in good conditions so I know what I am doing rather than try to figure it out for the first time when it goes on a trail at -20 in 4' of snow at night.no you don't have to remove the belt to replace the primary spring. it's easy to remove anyways but that's up to you. be a good time to inspect it if you remove it
Thank you very much for the help!
