I'm new to the whole Yamaha and 4 stroke thing since I came off a 06 Crossfire and a 2006 Rev 800 (which I changed the track on). So I do have a little bit of experience changing out a track. I've seen ttabs post which was a great help. The only worries I have are trying to cut the tunnel protectors out. Will I have to take the tank out or anything like that? I looked on bagadonitz post in the garage forum and it looks as though I may have to take the tank off and drill out some rivets? I hope I'm wrong on that one, but tomorrow after I get off work I'll be going to pick up a dremel and some extra bits. Then I'll start the project. Installing a new 144x15x1.75" Backcountry track on my XTX (40 miles a few days ago with the ripsaw track). Hope to have it done in 3-4 hours. Any advice/help would be great from other xtx/rtx owners. I will try to get some pictures as I progress. Thanks

tank is gravy to pull.. once u get all your plastic and seat off. its just a couple wire connectors, vent line, gas line, and 2 nuts you can have it pulled in 10 min if u wanted. but to get at the front rivets its easiest to pull the exhaust off as well. some ppl like to twist and pry on the protectors to break the rivets without taking everything apart and drilling them out. I had time and didn't want to screw up the protectors or tunnel incase i wanted to re-install the protectors so i did it the more conventional way.. heres a post where i posted some pics of the rivets that need to be drilled out. http://www.ty4stroke.com/viewtopic.php? ... sc&start=0

I actually removed the tunnel protectors with the tank on. With the track out I just bent down the tunnel protectors and beat the rivets out from underneath with a chisel. The protectors didn't get damaged and could go back in if need be, but that won't happen as long as I own it.

Does your XTX have extrovert drivers from the factory? If not, I highly recommend you put them in while your at it.

Just be extra carefull when removing the protectors from the heat exchanger, it would be a pain in the #*$&@ if you puncture it. I removed mine with a cutting wheel, came out pretty good. Just remember TAKE YOUR TIME!

well it's been an eventful night. Got the chaincase off and all the components inside were all taken off. Go to loosen up the track, that worked fine. Took off both springs and let them hang loose to help with getting the track out. Then I tried to get the front skid bolts out. Right side, no problem. Left side, just spins. Dunno why but there arent nuts on the backside of the tunnel. I tried putting the other bolt back in and loosening the other bolt but it still wouldn't come out. So I said "EFF IT" and put everything back together. Until I got to the chaincase and gears. Turns out after 5 hours of trial and error (my computer that I brought with me died and I forgot the power cord :o| )
that I put the main bottom drive gear in backwards and it caused everything to #*$&@ up, lol.

So I've learned a lesson, never work on your sled the day before you go riding. I'll be bringing it to the dealer wednesday to have them put the track on it for me. ;):D

Ya with the loctite they use on the bolts U usually halfto break free one side, tighten the bolt back up then tackle the other side. Air is a big help with that problem.

Use an air ratchet or electric power ratchet and those bolts will come out no sweat. Same thing putting it back together.

Thanks guys. My neighbor had suggested using his air rachet, but he said he didnt want to break the bolt off so he wouldn't touch it! 10k sled was too scary for him to mess with haha

I rode it 55 miles today with no problems. It'll be going to the dealership over the next week or 2 sometime to get the track swapped and hopefully they'll put a trail tank on there for me!
