I'm trying to put my big spring onto my spare 05 Monoshock and seems to be short of 1.5 inch. 
Is there a different spring for the 05 Mono from the 06-08 model?

We've swapped springs between 05 and 06 monoshocks and they all fit fine.
Seems odd yours is 1.5" short. There must be something wrong with it or must be the wrong spring.
What Yamaha did do was slightly increase the recommended spring rates on the springs between 05 and 06. They'll all fit, but for a given weight rider or even the stock sled, all of the recommended rates increased by roughly 10%.
There isn't anything special about mounting them. I've always used a pair of Macpherson strut compressors and a differential bearing spreader (to clamp around the spring retainer on the shock end) to swap the springs and change c-clip positions.
