Just for the book, i take a 500' drag on hard pack snow before, with start-up on sand.
And i just came from see my rear cooler, and he his real messy, full of sand. Maybe, the and probably the sand keep heat inside. But my dealer, said that light come before overheat, if not, why advertise when it's too late.
Thanks Guy, you all have good point

Listen to LB!!!! HE IS CORRECT!!!!! You will NOT hurt it by letting the sled shut off from reaching a high temp while idling! It shuts off before it’s in trouble. I have had it happen a couple of times, the biggest problem is the plugs act somewhat fouled & need the carbon blown off.
My buddy has an 03 and leaves it running til it shuts off almost every time he rides it. It’s amazing the damn sled even runs the way he treats it. He has no warranty & he couldn’t care less. After watching him put 5,000 of the hardest miles known to man, the sled runs like a watch!
These things are TOUGH!
If it ain’t spitting coolant out of the overflow, it likely isn’t too extremely hot. Mine never spit coolant when it shut off from extended idling, but it did spit coolant while riding before I added the Rear heat exchanger.

Would someone please clarify, I was told it would only shut down at idle. It you were riding and it overheated, the computer would not shut down. Does not makes sense to me. If it does it one way, why not the other. Has anyone experienced it shutting down while riding?

It is programmed to shut down after idle/high temp situation only.
Good point, if you were riding, it would not be a bad safety feature to shut down when engine reaches dangerouly high temps.

Great accurate info!
I was gonna say the carbs get hot and maybe it started burning rich so hard to start in morn ..I do know the putor will shut it down too...but I know he has nothing to worry about for sure! >>The boiling of the gas is good to know great info thanks!LazyBastard said:When it overheated, it didn't really overheat. The computer shut it down before any damage happened. The reason it was hard to start is that there was VERY HOT coolant in the carbs - after it died the gas bubbled out of the carb bowls.

it would seem to me that like a car, if it did overheat it would shut itself off. i wouldn't think that overheating would hurt the motor, aslong as it isn't prolonged. cars overheat all the time and continue running afterwards....

Cars dont shut down when they overheat. They SEIZE. After they cool down, the piston shrinks back to its normal size and works again, BUT, it will WEAR RAPIDLY by a true overheat.

shutting down

One time I was reading a trail map for about three minutes and it shut down(as manual said it would) and it was getting warm but it did start right back up and the warm light shut off as a went down the trail... I dont know about going down the trail and shutting down?? I would think it would but good question.Boston RX1 said:Would someone please clarify, I was told it would only shut down at idle.
