Noticed some vibration on my last ride and after looking over my jackshaft bearing found the bearing locknut has come off. Well of course from bouncing around the threads are all buggered up and won't thread back on!! :o| I read up on the fix for the bearing and I really want to avoid getting into the chain case if I can (was a real pain to get the reverse linkage right last time).
SO question is have any of you been successful in getting that bearing out with heat and possibly the special tool for the clutch side of the lock collar. My dealer should have it and I really would love to do this repair without pulling the whole thing apart. :o| :o| :o| :o| :o| :o|

The thing is, it's kinda pressed in there. I have heard a few people have gotten them out from the clutch side but not sure how they would do it. A friend of mine said he used u zip cut & cut it almost all the way through (not all the way through because you will bugger the shaft) then he broke the bearing by whacking it with a hammer & popped out the pieces.
I just changed my jackshaft bearing a week ago & opted for the long route just because I wanted to check the other bearings while I was at it. Good thing to because the chaincase bearing was pooched as well & the inner third bearing on the jackshaft was getting a little growly as well.

I heated it up with a torch and then cracked the bearing race with a screw driver. My bearing was shot though so all that was left was the outer and inner race. I heated the inner race up and it slid right off the collar but with the shaft still in there my only option to get the outer race out was with a torch.

You should pull the jackshaft any how as you might have spun the shaft in the bearing and damaged the shaft, been there done that. I have also found that to really tighten that collar nut it helps to remove the fuel tank so you can get in there with a spanner wrench. I know its alot of work but I find its the best way.

I just found the same thing on my 06. I took the clutch off for cleaning and noticed the collar sitting there. I managed to get it to start slightly then gently tapped it on with a punch/hammer. It took a long time to get it to start and I only got about half a turn on it before I couldn't turn it by hand. I took a chance and luckily it wasn't cross threaded. It might be worth a try to get it to start otherwise you need to pull it all the way down...and honestly it'll be quicker in the end.

Good point mt man I didn't think about that it may have spun in the shaft. Doktor c I tried for over an hour to thread it back on to no avail threads are just too beat up. Ugh looks like I need to get into the chain case. :o| I'm changing that bearing of course and the chain case since I'll be in there. Still love this machine but these small and this time not so small fixes are getting a bit old. At 5600 miles motor has been flawless but the repair list on everything else is getting longer!!

I tack welded a nut to a c-clamp and got the bearing out that way. 15 min job. Just need something on the clamp to push it out of the bore to where you can grab it.

Mt man big props to you and DoktorC I pulled the tank off tonight and was able to get a good angle on the collar and amazingly enough like doktorc's it was not cross threaded. My old Ohlins shock spanner wrench from my SRX would not fit but I was able to get a chisel in there and hammer it back into place as bearing looked fine and it had not spun on the shaft. I thought it was a long shot for sure as I futzed around with for an hour and could not get it threaded back on with the tank still on.
I AM A HAPPY MAN AND WILL SAY AS ALWAYS THIS SITE ROCKS!!! Thanks to all!! I am up and running again!!
