In a two stroke motor, a cylinder will fire every time a piston comes to the top. So for a 2-cylinder 2-stroke, you have a plug fire every 180 degrees.

In a 4-stroke, 2 cylinder motor, it is common to have both piston run up and down in parallel. Therefore, while one cylinder is getting spark, the other is on the exhaust stroke. With this configuration, you get a power stroke every 360 degrees.

The phazer has a different setup. The pistons do not run in parallel, making a goofy setup. While one piston is at the top, the other is at the bottom. Therefore, when one piston come up on the exhaust stroke, the other piston is right behind it. So what you end up with is a power stroke every 180 degrees, and then 540 degrees of exhaust strokes. Think if it as running somewhat like a V-twin motorcycle engine. This is what gives the Phazer it's unigue sound.

But........the parrallel twin (Jag) needs a balance shaft (or possibly 2) and the 180 degree firing twin does not.
Balance shafts add lbs and $$$.

Hello from a new member. I found this thread interesting because I just bought a Vector GT after riding Arctic Cat two strokes for the last 9 years. I've been wanting a four stroke for a long time and have watched the market for a few years now to see what developed. The Arctic Cat T660 didn't excite me and the four stroke Polaris seems to be having some problems. Also, I haven't found a Polaris dealer around here that I like. While the new Jaguar looks great on paper, I had the following reasons not to buy one:

* High price tag.
* First year with a new chassis design.
* First year with a new engine design.
* First year with a new rear suspension design?
* First year with a new adjustable riding position design.
* Arctics Cat's history of bugs in first year designs.
* Our local Arctic Cat dealer doesn't sell snowmobiles any more.

Then I thought of the following reasons to buy the Yamaha:

* Great price on a new, left over '06 model.
* Proven engine, chassis, and suspension.
* Good local dealer.
* Past good experience with Yamaha motorcycles and ATVs.
* Lots of recommendations from other owners of Yamaha four strokes.

Now all I need is some snow!

My bro-in-law bought the Jag. Looks nice so far, of course no seat time as of yet so final eval will have to wait. He was disappointed to find out after purchase and delivery that the sled has non-rebuildable shocks. Seems odd for a sled of it's cost.

The only thing intriguing about the Jag is the complete adjustability. I personally hope it works and is durable. That will push the other OEMs to bring it to the market in their own sleds, and it is an idea whose time has definitely come. For 90% of my riding I want to be down as low as I can be behind a windshield and out of the wind at 50 - 80 MPH. However, it would be great to be able to simply stop and move the seat, bars and windshield up when the trail gets rough. (which is next to never in Quebec.)

The handlebars are very slick and adjust very easily. The windshield was a little more difficult but not hard by any means but seemed a little flimsy.
The seat adjusted easily as well but when in the higher positions it leaves a gap at the rear that appears that it could fill up with snow in powder conditions.

Very anxious to give it a try this winter.

I really liked the adjustable seat and handlebars on the new cats but the front end would take alot of getting used to. It's really downright ugly to me at the moment, not as bad as the freestyle but close.

Have you looked at a Phazer lately?

That's completely eye of the beholder. He said the new cats are ugly to *him* at the moment. I wasn't keen on the phazer at first but I grew to like the look. The Cats have remained ugly to me. Sad cause they had some of the best looking sled out there in the Firecat series IMO.

i have been hearing things that yamaha might change there front end to something like the arctic cats. If you have the 2007 snowmobile DVD under raceing hilights there is a nytro in freestyle that has a arctic cate look to it. Just what i herd nothin serious.

Welcome newbe...................I've owned a 05 vector and really like it... Great gas mileage, smoooooooooooooooth idle, nice sound.. The rear exhaust makes the difference between the other 4-strokers. Vector motors are very reliable................................. 'period' Easy to change oil, spark plugs etc. You will enjoy the lack of fumes after a long day on the trails.. Good luck.. And enjoy. MM

No doubt, you are absolutely right. It just hasn't grown on me yet. Looks like a quad, not a sled.
