Just what kind of filter is this

By the looks of the filters, that china made filter does not look like it would trap as much as the yamaha one does. If you still have the receipt, see what it says they specifically charged you for. I also would not be surprised if they skimped on the type of oil used as well...

Good point! If they cheaped out on the filter, then it is highly probable they cheaped out on the oil too :o|

Is this the dealer in Peterborough Blue?

I had the dealer change my oil and filter at the initial 800 km interval. I have changed only the oil twice since then (before storage) choosing to adhere to Yamaha's 4 year 20000 km filter change interval. I can't get to my 2011 Apex right now but my question is can you get a peak at the filter w/o removing too much to see what type was put on? I guess I should just change the filter with a new factory one to be on the safe side. I've changed the filters on pre 2011 Apex's. Is the procedure exactly the same or are there some subtle differences? Is it possible to change only the filter w/o draining the oil as I filled it with full syn. before storage? Raising the front end perhaps? If so, how high?

Most dealers have bulk oil drums. I wouldn't worry about what oil they used, as nobody is gonna really want a drum of 0w30 sitting around. Since its really only used in sleds. So my guess is they used yamalube or amsoil.

Apex, you have to remove the air box and then with a flashlight you might be able to get a peak at the filter. Otherwise it is located under the battery tray which all has to be removed to service the filter

Not really getting the logic to your assumption?? :dunno:

A few posts back someone mentioned about skimping out on cheap oil as well. I'm saying its highly unlikely.

filter

Take the filter and cut off the base with side grinder compare the inside
with the yamaha filter. I have done this and compared it to a hi flow
filter.

Yamaha make (sells) a very good filter i don't think they make filters.

I agree, they are just not worth twice+ the money though imo.

Irv: just got back from dealer and Apex filter was just over 13 dollars(Cdn). Couldn't believe it. Last Apex filter was over $20. Vector filter still over $20 though!

That's a strange one, did they say why"
Maybe they feel more sorry for the Apex owners as the filters are harder to get at? :dunno:

Also, are they not the same filter anyways?

Are you in Ontario ApexSE/Vector?

not that i buy yamaha fitlers, but thats only $7 more a year. imo there are very good cheaper aftermarket filters though. i think filters like hiflo and wix are very good.

Irv: I don't ask questions when Yamaha prices go down!(shock factor I guess). Yes I'm in Ontario.

Don't blame you ;)!

Guess if I decide to go back to Yamaha filters, I'll order them for an Apex instead of a Vector?
(Still can't get my head around that one? #$%&* )

vector uses a 5dm filter... an apex filter is too long

Thanks, I didn't know that ;)!
