Broke my W arm and took out my track. Had the W arm (they had a 06 take-off arm) and track replaced. They also replaced a bearing while in there. I was charged by a yamaha dealer 5 hours to perform the work at a 25% higher labor rate because I ordered the pre-drilled and pre-studded track myself as that is not an option from Yamaha. Is this reasonable?

Um no that's not reasonable. Why would they charge you 25% more because you ordered a track that was prestudded? The shop rate should be the rate regardless.

While we don't like it, it is understandable. Same thing if you buy tires for your car, some places will install them for free. If you bought the tires off the Internet and then took them to that place would you expect them to still install them for free? Many simply refuse to install them if you don't buy the tires from them. For most shops, some of their profit is in selling you the parts. I guess another way of looking at it is they give you a discount on labor if you got the parts from them as most customers do.

I understand the labor mark-up for installing parts that they did not sell. My real question is whether the 5 hours is reasonable. From what I have read on this board it seems high.

5 hours is pretty reasonable to remove skid, remove driveshaft, fix all the stuff, & re-assemble.

IMO is probably about right.
(Not too sure about the increased labor rate, unless it is their normal rate again, but the hours are about right.)

For everyone else, getting your W-arm re-inforced BEFORE it breaks is ALOT cheaper...

Thanks to all. My plan is to start doing the maintenance myself with the help form this board.

The new (take off) W arm that was installed was from an 06. Is that arm ok of shoud I get the OEM 08/09 arm or have the stock 06 w arm reinforced and powder coated over the summer by Halfbaked?

I have already been looking at the process to remove the skid and replace the W arm and it does not look that bad.

From what I have seen, Half-baked is doing an AWESOME job on them, wouldn't consider anything else. ;)!
Even the new factory one doesn't look as tough.

Question is, is there enough of it left to re-work?
Have to send some pics to Half-baked & ask.

yea i bought some shocks for my truck at Caadian tire and had trouble installing them. I had broken a bolt that was in the frame that i needed to remove, so i went to my local shop. they wouldent install the shocks for me, its the way it is. so i paid the labor for them to take out the bolts lol

Pretty clean breaks

I seem to be missing something. Or things.

First, if your W arm busted, why would the dealer install another 06 one? They are weaker than the updated ones and it will fail again. You would think they would tell you that.

Second, why does it matter where you got the track? I never heard of "2" labor rates. It is what it is, no matter where you buy your parts.

Third, a W arm and replacing the track in 5 hours? Seems a little long. I would think 3. I think I could do it in 5 in my garage...and I am a wanna be snowmobile mechanic! And I've only replaced my track once.

Just my thoughts.

I knew more about the "revisions" to the W arms than the dealer. My original broken on is an 05 rx-1 arm. When I asked them whether what they were putting in it (take-of from an 06) was the most recent version of the W arm they said YES.

It was only by researching it here that I determined that the 06/07 is not the same as the 08/09 arm. I plan to either buy a new OEM 08/09 arm, send the broken 05 arm to Halfbaked, of send the 06 arm to Halfbaked at the end of the season (hopefully not broken)

IMO 5 hours seams wayyyy to long. I replaced my track this season and doing it myself took 3 hours and this was my first time replacing a track on an apex. Regardless of me doing it, a snowmobile mechanic should be able to do this no problem in 3 hours. I did everything you just said: remove skid (i also reinforced my w-arm with some welds and tubing above shock mount), replaced driveshaft bearing, and added a new ice ripper XT track. All this for a first time only took me 3 hours by myself other than when I put the driveshaft back into the sled (holding up the track while sliding the shaft in) and putting the rear bolts in the skid when reinstalling.
I think they got you when they said they charged you an increase labor rate also. I have never of a mechanics shop increasing the price because you brought the parts. Sounds shady to me. Mabye the 25% increase is their standard rate and the less 25% rate is the discount they give customers who buy the parts through the dealership?

Hind sight responce here but I have one friend who has a sled repair shop and another friend who works at a dealer (in fact yammy) and they both say labor is flat rate. So I think they did that just to get the money out of ya that they didn't make off the track. My friend from the dealer said that they do install parts that customers bring in but they stress that they will not warentee the part and that sometimes it takes more time to "fit" a non yammy part.
