Lets all fix this Crappy clutching once and for all

just got it back...is really interesting...shaved some off the shockwave and some off the clutch...

will try and do so today...putting the new track on today :) if I get time...

2010 FX Nytro MTX SE 153, Sea level to 2000 Feet, what would you guys choose ? I can either get the sea level kit installed from the dealer (gears, chain, clutching) or I can buy a set of Drag n Fly's and run the stock 20/40 gearing. Cost is about the same, I just want a good overall set up for my elevation. Is the stock gearing too low for flatlanders ? I've done a lot of reading on the subject, and I've asked around, just looking for a general consensus.

Appreciate the input ;)!

You sure that thing is stock at 20/40? (Check the pic from the Yamaha setup manual!)

I attached the (recommended) High Altitude tuning sheet for ya too... don't know how useful it really is!

Hmnnn, if ours are both the SZ models, then it looks as if we're both running 18/40 gearing stock, correct ? My dealer thought it was 20/40 stock, but perhaps he was reading it incorrectly ? Maybe there's a difference between CDN and US sleds ?

Yeah, 20/40 was stock for the 08-09 models if I remember correctly.
Yamaha always ships they're mountain sleds, set-up for 10,000' from the factory. Then let the dealer/owner set it up for they're elevation.
Using the info Big ECB posted, you can see whats reguired to set'em up for sea level. Usually just a gear change and adding some rivit weight to the primary clutch will get you a good base line.
I don't know that I would go with the 22/40 it shows in the chart though. Unless you want good high speed top end. If top end is not as important, I'd go with 20/40 for sea level. It will still be fast enough for most guys, and the belt will run cooler.
After the primary clutch is dialed in, and the shift rpms are correct. You can play around with helix angles some, to see some more improvement.
For example the flat lander Nytros use a 43* helix while the mountain sleds use a 39*. Since I mostly ride mountains but like a fairly agressive upshift. I run a 43/39 helix (16" 144" 2" track), so far its working out pretty good.
Each guy likes a little different set-up. I perfer to keep the helix angle split fairly narrow or straight angle helixes for mountain use. ;)!

Confirmed with my dealer today that stock gearing on the MTX SE models for 2010 is 18/40. The standard MTX 153 is unchanged from last year @ 20/40. I decided to order the sea level kit and up the gearing to what Yamaha recommends for my elevation, being 22/40. I'll probably try my Drag n Fly's on the MTX after break in and compare, and I'll report back in a few months, hopefully sooner
