So I've dabbled in lots of repairs on my 07 Phazer, 06&07 Apex, and 10 Nytro. Last year had a little starter issue with the Nytro, and found the positive lead loose, so i tightened it and it worked... until of course it didn't this week.
Question first, then the story: Are Arctic Cat 3020-364 Starters the same as yamaha 8GL-81890-00-00
After removing the starter (Thanks to the Pry bar method), searching for a new OEM (Which are on backorder across north america is seems from Japan) I found out the same starter fits the vector, the VK 1000, Venture, viper, nytro, sidewinder, which surely makes sense.... so I got an OEM from an 06 Vector from a Yamaha Scrapper local to me here (GOOD, 60 days for OEM order is about all our season is in total).
So... looking further into this, on some of the after market sites, I started running into various Part Numbers, and it appears to me the 8GL-81890-01-00 / 00-00 is the same as the Arctic Cat 3020-364
Reason I bring this up is I had the magnet issues on my 07 phazer, replaced that, now had issues with Nytro, which may just be bad aftermarket quality, however theres an arctic cat scrapper that has shelves full of arctic cat starters. it appears to be the same as what fits a lot of Arctic Cat models.
Noticed this first from Kimpex 193743 ($269.16)
But NOT on Heavy Duty Kimpex 190036 (184.99): (only lists the Yamaha Models)
Also noticed it with DB starters website, stating theirs fits either sled. Now I would have thought 2 things -- the Kimpex HD would work on either the cats or the yamahas, and also would have thought a "HD" would be more than the regular model.... either way have read mixed reviews on Kimpex starters, and all other aftermarkets in general.
So the question really is, are Arctic Cat 3020-364 the same. if they are, this would be great for me and maybe someone else looking in the used market, as I really struggled to find a NEW oem, and then the yamaha scrapper actually only had 1 used OEM in a vector he was actively stripping to get me going. Arctic Cat use denso for many models for sure, so it makes sense.
below is my used oem from the 06 vector on the top and what I think is an aftermarket from my 10 Nytro notice the flat sealing ring on the starter drive, and also the lack of markings on the case on the shaft side.
