By buddy is thinking about buying a 2004 Polaris Edge trail sled with a 600cc Liberty motor.. The sled has 2200 miles and seems in really good shape.. I am sure someone on here has owned one or knows someone that had owned one... Anything to look out for on this sled ??? What's a decent price to pay for it ? He wants a Yamaha but he prices around here are too high !!! Thanks
The drive axle bearing are notorius on them for going out once they get over 1500 miles. Those motors are bullet proof it's the most reliable engine polaris ever made.Ceck the comp[ression and make shure the bearing isn't gone.that's about it on those sleds.

Pro was right, a good one for polaris, but they still blow, iv been inside of two of them so far..., both totally stock, untouched
Personally, id keep looking for a yamaha, the difference is HUGE between polaris and yamaha. Also, the edge is a low to the ground type sled, similar to a proaction yamaha. On that note, iv seen some triples go for around 2500 in awsome shape, what is the price range that your buddy has set?

actually the bolt holding the bottom drive gear on it the chaincase breaks off. polaris says they were torqued to high at the factory. anyway that head rolls around til it gets caught between the chain and gear. snapping the chain destroying the gears and taking the cases with it. BEWARE.

He cant find a cheap RX1? Man for the money the RX1 would be such a rush compared to the liberty 600 in terms of power and the "oh sh**" factor when you hit the gas.

When i got my rx-warrior, my buddys both had Polaris XCSP 600s with M-10s.. It was flat out laughable how much faster my warrior was compared to those 600s.. I could pull away like they had the brakes on and be a half mile ahead in a short period of time..
The are good running sleds.. but sure not bulletproof, they ride great in the back and handle decent..
I still have a old indy 500.. its my back up sled in case something should ever happen to my apex..

As said before, when looking at a Polaris sled check the bearings for play. Between my father and I, we have had 5 Polaris sleds with 4 of them going over 5,000 miles. All 4 that went over 5K blew at least one crank bearing, 3 of them (XCR600, XC800, Indy 500) lost the clutch side bearing and one (XC800) lost both. Our engine builder that replaced the bearings said those Polaris engines keep him in business, he then showed me a Polaris bearing next to a Yamaha bearing and it was shocking. The Yamaha bearing was more than twice as wide with much better seals and ball bearings.
I would look for an old RX-1, the power and riding are well ahead of the older XC Edge chassis. After owning and riding a 2002 XC800 Edge X, my 03 RX-1 was so much smoother, faster, and more fun to ride. I stay right next to my fathers 02 XC800SP right until about 100mph where I keep picking up speed and he just drops off, a 600 is no competition. Handling is tighter and gas mileage is laughable, about 16-17mpg for me and 9-10mpg for him. Plus no smoke, no oil refills, and no scheduled engine service for 25,000 miles.

I owned a Polaris edge 600 for 2 1/2 years. Had over 11.000n miles when I sold it. Never had a problem with it. Then again I had Polaris sleds from 1978 to 2004, and never had one back to the dealers for any problems. A lot more then I can say for the 4 Yamaha 4-strokes I have had since 2004 which are always having problems, but I like the 4 strokes too much to switch back to Polaris. As soon as Polaris puts out a 4-stoke I like I will probably switch back to Polaris for the reliability I always had with them. And as everyone who has ever ridden on a New York Totally Yamaha ride, knows I put alot of miles on each year, and I ride fast and hard, and I weight 255lbs. Polaris has always held up for me. Polaris suspensions are a lot more reliable then the crap Yamaha suspensions.
He is looking for an older 4 stroke but the prices around here are very high... He just started looking and this Polaris popped up. It's really clean and well taken care of... Buying an older 4 stroke is a little scary because of all the issues with exhaust donuts, suspensions etc. It's not a problem when you have a nice garage and the tools to do it in, but we don't have that option. The last sled he owned was an 1993 Exicter SX and that thing was a pain in the #*$&@ with the carburators and back suspension..
With the luck I have had with all my Yamaha's he wants a Yamaha..I think we will be making a road trip to Michigan to buy one, Good deals down there !!!!!! Thanks for all the info....

He's worried about a couple of bad exhaust donuts on a used 4-stroke but not about crank bearings coming apart and destroying a complete engine top and bottom...
He could luck out and get a good one and with 2200 miles, he should be able to get at least 3,000 miles out of it but I would buy a 4-stroke Yamaha with 20,000 miles before I bought a 2-stroke Polaris with 2,000 miles.
If he likes Yamaha and doesn't mind 2-stroke, look for an older Viper or SXR/SRX. Those sleds are great to ride and for a low rear suspension, they actually handle the bumps very well. The power is incredible and the front suspension will hold onto a corner flatter and harder then any sled out there.
