Thanks for alleviating my fears guys! Mr. Pitstop, you sound like you were in roughly the same position I'm in, in terms of buying a sled that has probably sat around for a while. I'm definitely going to make a list of the things that have been noted here and just do a quick check of the sled before I buy it. I'll also be changing all the fluids when I pick the sled up like you did.
It looks like I'll be picking the Attak up soon so when I do I'll let you guys know how it looks and post some pictures too (cuz everyone loves those right?)

My 06 Attak has been good to me. My mods are in my sig. I have about ~3000 miles on it. I have only run into 2 issues: battery replacement and the chain tension loosened up on me so I wasn't moving(only cost me $100 to fix)

I have an '06 Attak with 3K miles and almost all of the before mentioned problems and I will say they are very trivial compared to blowing a set of rings or spinning a crank bearing out on the trail.
The only mods I've done is 8" Bergstrom Tiple Points and a Cobra track. The only time my Attak tried to leave me stranded was when the ignition relay froze up. I remembered what I read on here and switched it with the headlight relay (same model) and the sled fired right up and about a minute later the headlight came on. Went to my dealer and got a new one on warranty.
Other than the rear suspension being weak I love this sled and have a hard time even thinking about getting rid of it.

My 06 has been almost trouble free. I did have an exhaust leak that turned out to be a bad bellows on the flex pipe. 3 broken cables on the Mono adjuster and that covers the bad. I replaced all of the front bushings with Ulmers kit at 5,000 mi. To combat ANY further skid issues, I installed an ExpertX 136 setback to 144. Currently has a Mountain Mod seat, but am replacing that with a Boss Hirise Flattop. Handwarmer fix by Yamaheater cured that issue. Tried the sublead/upgrade kit and wasn't satisfied. Skis are Slydog Powderhounds with Bergstrom Triplepoints. Used his bars and skii shims on stock skis and would have been satisfied with that setup if I STAYED on the trail LOL! Everything else has been gas and go.

I've been trying to repress the memories of my 06 Attak, but I am obliged to reply. Unless you are loaded
stay away from the attak. I paid 14g for mine and in 3 full seasons and about 4000miles doubled the purchase price in parts alone...not counting mods. I love the motor. It's addicting, but everything...I mean everything else on this sled will break. 3 Headlight pods, 7 a-arms, 3 w-arms, mono cables, bushings, rad, chaincase, donuts, y-pipes, wheels, ECU, spindles, seat, cowl fasteners, 10 belts. My God, the nightmare returns. If I can save one person from the misery i went through, it will be worth while. If you go ahead anyway...store this in your memory bank "I told you so". Going to pick up my new assault
on Friday and will leave the Yammie in the garage until the landfill lowers its rates.

Wow, I've never heard of anyone breaking that many parts on one sled other than on a polaris. I myslef blew the motor 3 times in one season on my last poo 800 and all 3 were rebuilt by the dealer, all 3 needed new jugs or re plated, and all 3 were over $2000 each. That was $6000 in one season in the motor alone but still not the array of parts you have broken on this sled. I'd call in the lemmon law on that, I've dropped sleds out of the back of the truck on the interstate at 80 and didn't replace that many parts... When you say you went through 7 A amrs, are you saying 7 times an A arm broke for no reason?? Other than wrecking the sled I don't think I know anyone who has had A arm problems. The rear suspension maybe but not the front..

Sorry Hayastusa, but I'm going to have to agree with Pitstop on this one...There is no reason that ANY sled should be going through 7 A-arms, 3 W-arms and 10 belts in 3 seasons. Honestly, I don't know why you even continued to use the sled after the third or fourth belt (a belt every 400 miles!?) and why you didn't notify Yamaha right away.
As far as Polaris goes, my entire family (besides myself) is using Polaris currently and problems have plagued all of them. My dad bought his first brand-new sled (2008 IQ Shift) a few years back and the first thing he noticed was that the speedo cable didn't work...He had to go back, get a new one and put it in himself. Sure, he probably could have had the dealership do it but you all know how long things take to get done there right before the season starts. The following year my uncle's 2008 Dragon Switchback blew the stator coil on it and Polaris basically laughed at him when he tried to get them to cover it! That was another $1000 down the Polaris drain. So thank you for your input Haya but I'm going to chalk your case up to the Lemon Law as well...Someone must have been half drunk when they put your sled together or something.

Are you sure Yamaha makes mountain skis for the attak? I've checked the website catalog and the 2011 catalog and they only seem to make them for mountain-class sleds?
Is this what you may have been referring to? http://www.yamaha-motor.com/sport/a...ail/5/438/1828/13011/all/1/4997/0/detail.aspx
The Mountain skis fit the Attak too.
http://www.yamaha-motor.com/sport/acces ... etail.aspx
These fit as long as you get the hardware kit (spacers, longer bolt, etc.)
Ah, so it IS true! Thanks for the find!
Ive got a set I might sell off a mtn apex...with the right bolts and spacers...just no ski rubbers..
My sled is for sale still, It has, well, a couple upgrades and I would be willing to take trades.

Are you sure you are not describing the repairs to a Ford Super Duty. Sounds like my POS truck. HEHE.hayastusa said:I've been trying to repress the memories of my 06 Attak, but I am obliged to reply. As you can imagine, the stories are endless, but I'll share a couple. At the 60 mile mark, I was running a trail when I spotted a stump sticking out of the snow. Managed to straddle it at about 50mph and thought I got by clean since I didn't feel any contact. Got to the trailer and the left ski was 4 inches further back than the right. Turns out the shock mount that for some reason hangs below the lower a-arm nicked the stump and twisted both a-arms. Dealer said i must have crashed into something, or "dropped off the trailer"
We had our differences, dealer wanted 2 G's to fix. I said FU and bought the a-arms from yamaha sports plaza for 400 fixed it myself. Haven't been back to the dealer since.
First time the rear suspension collapsed (about 2000 miles)I was doing about 60. When the W arm failed, it pierced the track, tore it completely in half and sent me doing the superman over the bars. Of course the breeze created by my body flying over the headlight pod snapped those stupid plastic brackets. (headlight pod 300, W arm 250, track 600, getting rid of that shatty ripsaw...priceless)
One day my sled just decided not to start, (I was 150 miles from home). Took it to a dealer closest to my location and it stayed in their shop for three weeks. They claimed they put 25 hours labour into it trying to find the problem. In the end, they sat a brand new apex beside mine and swapped out relays, fuses and electrical connections until they finally had replaced everything and suddenly it started. To this day, I don't know what the problem was. Total bill 2800. I've got about $10 000 worth of stories on top of these, but I don't want to hi jack this thread and I can't see the screen for the tears in my eyes.
PS. One belt lasted 15 minutes (thank god they are only $45 at yamaha sports plaza, spare belt for my new assault was $203). Just for fun venture into some snow with the attank. If it's deeper than your ankles, you will not enjoy.

I have like 7000 miles on my 06 attak and I had to replace exhaust donuts, put on a cobra track awesome. Putting in a set of a arm bushings from ulmer racing. Put in the updated front torque arm. And last but not least the yamaheater for the hotgrips.
Overall its been a good sled.

2,200 Miles on my 08 Apex last season. I had the carbides worn completely off, and I destroyed the remote adjuster cable. I cross a lot of roads on my travels, and low snow on a particular section of our trail means running asphault. I would not blame the sled for the stock runners wearing so quickly. I put on some cobra duals ($185), which is more of an upgrade that a replacement.
I had 2 small idlers that were a bit stiff, so I updated ALL my wheels with 2010 wheels which come with replaceable bearings. I put new sliders in because I had the suspension out to get my shock revalved and put in a 4th wheel kit. Which wasn't neccessary, the mono is a beautiful on the groomed trail for which it was intended to run. I do more than groomed trail riding, I spend a third of my time on ROUGH private trail so I thought this would be a good idea. When I called my dealer about ordering my 4th wheel kit the parts lady mentioned that a notification about the marginal snow kit was issued the day before... so I said "what the hell, I'll get one of those too... I may as well get new sliders while I'm at it".
I punched some holes in my shroud during off trail riding, so I installed a skid plate.
I put in CR10EK's, a ram-air kit, and Ulmer Stage 2 clutching just for kicks. Once I convince my wife they are neccessary with the engine and clutching mods, I'm ordering some studs.
Bottom line for the year:
Money put into parts - roughly $2500
Money I NEEDED to spend- $250 (oil filter, engine & gear oil, carbides, 2 idlers and a remote adjuster)
LOVE the sled, the 4 cylinder is a thing of beauty. Smooth when you want it to be - but pin the flipper and it unleashes it's fury. I always carry an extra belt... but I've never had to use it.

Phew, looks like I have some catching up to do!
@ SJ-When you set a price for those, lemme know! Also, can you get those ski rubbers at a dealership?
@Hayastusa-Again, I have a feeling that your case is an anomaly...From what you've said, it sounds like you really beat on your sled. I can understand why the dealership didn't want to cover the damage to the A-arms if you hit a stump doing 50MPH down the trail.
Also, I am well aware of the rear support arms failing in this model sled but I can't only imagine a failure this catastrophic happening after 2000 miles unless you were hitting some BIG bumps on a consistent basis.
Lastly, in terms of your belt, there is either something VERY wrong with your clutching or you were hammering on the throttle doing "stop and go's." Belts on 4-strokes don't just blow up like that.
@Carver-These are the sort of problems/upgrades that I figured I'd be running into. I was also considering getting a skidplate before I did anything. I think I could do without having to deal with holes in my shroud this season
