So I'm currently a student working toward getting my degree in industrial technology, wanting to end up a machinist. I'm looking for some sort of project I can make for my 09 fx nytro xtx. I'm going to make some 2" risers but was looking to make the brackets for the steering relocation kit too. I was wondering if anyone could give me any specs on the relocation kit if they have one, i can't find any prints or specs for them. Also, if anyone has any suggestions for other projects I would appreciate it. I can manual lathes and mills as well as some hass 3axis cnc mills available for my use. Thanks!

I have several engineering degrees and for the past 20 years have worked as a technical specialist for the engineering department at a university. I work with students on many projects and my advice to you would be make some measurements on your sled to determine what is needed to relocate the steering post. Copying a design that has already been developed won't help you learn. The post has two mounts that can be modified to change the angle of the steering. Making a few measurements to determine what modifications are needed then designing the necessary parts should be part of the learning process. With the equipment available to you, machining the parts should be easy.

Agreed^ copying dimensions and drawings is a machinist job to make the part. Engineering it is the process of measuring the system, calculating the current design and improving it via more calculations, mechanical advantages, aesthetics in some case, etc etc. The steering relocate is a good one to start with since the sled doesn't have to come apart too much and you really cant mess anything up and wreck your sled while riding.
Another you might want to consider is the wheel mounts for adding an extra wheel like in the excel kit. This would get you started with a basic idea and you could change it as you see fit or to learn your machining limits and making the idea work with what you have. The stock ones are cast pieces which are machined after but making it from a solid piece should be doable.

Engineer a new rail extension. Consider a tipped rail extension for 121 to 137 and 144/141 tracks. Design your own oil tank or come up with an original idea for a tunnel block off plate / air gap plate that hasn't been thought of. Good luck!

I'm a mechanical engineer with some machining and fabrication background and I Love making one off things for my sled. Working on a tunnel block off plate now. I also made a custom bumper sorta like the Skinz one that goes up along side of the tunnel but is way more heavy duty. It's a fun job doing things like this. Some day I wish to work in the power sport industry designing whole sleds or atv's.
