My son is 15years old and has a 07' Phazer and my 13year old daughter has a 94' vmax 500. They both have certification cards for the state to legally ride solo with me along. Do you guys tell them that your children are riding these sleds solo, or just insure them under your own policy. I what to be legit but I'm curious to how much my rates will increase or will they even insure these minors? Any help would be appreciated.

I didn't say anything to my agent when I put some insurance on my 500 that my 12 year old daughter is going to ride this year. I look at it this way, the sled is insured no matter who is going to ride it and both of your kids have certificates they are as legal as you and I.

dont tell them the kids are riding them, my friend did that with his 2 boys when they were 14, insurance company wouldnt insure the 2 older 500's he had picked up cheap, their excuse was the boys were 2 young even though they had their permits. he finally got insurance on them but what a pain

Read your insurance policy carefully!

There may be an age or AUTOMOTIVE LICENSE clause in there somewhere! Or a clause that says the driver has to have automotive insurance coverage in order for this policy to be effective.

If there is such a thing and they get into an accident, NOT ONLY may they NOT BE COVERED, YOU may declined insurance coverage for the foreseeable future.

And THAT is NOT worth the risk!

They have to be insured drivers in the first place for coverage! I told my agent that my son rides the Crossfire 700 once in a while as I have my wife as a primary (she has never rode it and all 4000 miles are with the kid on it). He was 13 at the time and they asked for his cert. number and put him on with no increase to my premium. Last year a tree jumped out in front of him and I just told them i was driving with no questions asked. You got to make sure the kids are covered no matter what.

Not sure if it is the same on both sides of the border or even from one insurance company to the other but here's my story. I got a quote from TD General Insurance that was by far the cheapest and at one point I asked a question about my son who was 14 at the time. As soon as they heard that I had a son that was over 12 but too young to have a driver's license they wouldn't even insure me until he got the Ontario Snow Vehicle Opertor's Permit. I asked if I could insure it just for me and they said 'No, as long as there is a child that is old enough to ride they won't give the adult insurance unless the child is certified'. I don't think it affected the price at all, they just wanted to cover all bases. Then when my second son turned 12 he had to take the course too. So if you have a son or daughter who will never drive, do not even mention it or they could force you to get them certified. If they will drive, make sure the insurance company knows and do what you gotta do.

Wow-there is certainly nothing cut and dry about what to do. I think I will just keep the sleds insured and hope for the best.
