I have a 2003 RX-1 with roughly 3000km's on it.
Great sled and it appears to not be burning any oil so I am happy.
Weird scenario:
Upon start-up, the usual check engine light flashes once (normal start-up diagnostics) and all is good. With the engine warm, I pull away and ease into a leg of my trip. If I punch the throttle and accelerate hard, the oil light comes on every time. I have checked the oil level with the dipstick fully threaded into place as per the service manual and the level is well within the crosshatched region (near the top).
Is there anything besides oil level that could trigger the light, or is my sensor just acting up?
Looking for advice as I hate almost soiling myself every time the light comes on.

i had that happen once...oil level was fine...i think the connector just wasn't making a good connection or wasn't plugged in all the way, as it never did it again. Clean the contacts in the plug and check they aren't damaged.

You can check the sensor with an ohm meter. There is a spec in the Tech Manual.

You are low on oil.
You're suposed to check the oil without screwing in the dipstick. If it's in the crosshatch region with it screwed in it is actually very low - probably below E.
To properly check the oil:
- Ride the sled until it is fully warmed up (don't just idle it for a few minutes, take it for a 10 minute ride). If it's not 100% warmed up the oil will read too low (alternatively if it's only been idled for a few minutes, don't fill it past about 1/2 way up the cross hatch area and you'll be safe).
- Park the sled on a flat surface and let the engine idle for approximately 1 minute.
- Shut it off and check the oil. Do not screw in the dipstick when checking, just lower it until the threads touch each other.

ReX, thanks for the reminder and yes, I was low on oil but not that bad. The sensor would come on when the oil would slosh to the back of the container.
The sad thing here is that I have checked the oil level the proper way many times before I owned an RX-1 myself and of course this season I totally forgot how to do it on my own sled.
Oil level is now fine... Yamaha should really put some sort of a procedure sticker on the Deltabox frame or something as an on-the-task reminder.

Put a little dab of dielectric grease on the prongs of the sensor, cheap insurance.

On my 2003 I used to have the EXACT same thing happen. Only happened when I fired it up and took off hard immediately. I think it has something to do with the sensor. The light would come on and then shut off after a few minutes.
Try this....fire up the sled and as soon as it fires...take off hard...it'll probably come on.
Then try this....shut the sled down after a ride and when you fire it up again let it idle for a min or so. Take off hard and it won't come on.
Just something I remeber from my 2003....nothing to worry about. I am sure it has something to do with the sensor not getting an accurate read.
PS....no worries when the oil light comes on. It means that you are down exactly 1 QT (or Litre in Canada). I used to ONLY add oil to my sled after the light came on. Never before. That's the most accurate way of knowing how much you are down.

On my sled if the oil light came on the oil was down to the E line (lines below the cross hatch region).
To bring it right to the full mark (lines above the cross hatch region) it would take just a little over 1/2 a quart or 1/2 a liter.
If I was to add a liter on my sled it would substantially overfill it.
I only saw the oil light once as I always filled it up when the oil level got close to the bottom of the cross hatch region (at the beginning of the season I didn't expect it to burn 1/2 a liter in 1000 kms and the light came on).
I always let my machine fully warm up before hitting the throttle even moderately so I can't confirm the cold engine/low oil feature.
My engine still blew up so maybe doing all the right things doesn't help... (especially when a nut comes loose inside the engine...)

Good info ReX...sorry to hear about your sled. Hope you get it fixed.
One thing to note here...he is referring to a 2003 and we have 2005's. Having owned both, I find they are VERY different in alot of respects. Yamaha may have changed the low oil light reading after experiencing the oil burining issues in 2003. I know for a fact that on my 2003 when the light came on I was down exactly 1 Litre. To date I have not had any oil buring issues on my 05.
I owned the 2003 sled for about 5000 miles and I was lucky...I only burned a litre every 1000 miles. Some guys burned 4 and 5 times that amount.
PS. Thanks for all your help on the suspension settings...I set my skid up per your specs and it's awesome!
