Lower ball joint bulletin out this week 20oct08: got mine on

AK...the entire assembly was extremely tight when I installed it(the shoulder of the bolt did not protrude past the spindle), it was the ball joints that wore out. A few of the ID racers had the same problem. It was a great idea(and still is) just not as high grade of material as it needs to be.

I REALLY like the bronze races. Ulmer Racing needs to start making these.

I chose not to add a grease zerk. I just put a light coat of Krytox on them when I did the install. The bronze doesn't really need grease to run on the steel ball and I didn't want to be collecting too much crud in a grease paddy. A couple drops of light oil now and then will be enough to get decent life out of the pieces.

if you have a drawing of those - or some dimensions available - can you pm them to me. thanks

also - what kind of bronze did you use? I would assume the harder the better, do you agree? silicon bronze perhaps?

Who were the Iron Dog racers?

ball joints

Only two teams last year ran the modified ball joints, team 32 and team 23
I've only got 1100 miles on mine but they are still tight....will see how these updated 09 ones hold up.

Talked to the tech at my dealer last night. He just got back from the new classes they all had to go to. He said they do have an updated lower ball joint, and will change it under warranty. He suggested changing it out before snow hits. He also said they are only going to let the warranties go so far on the front end coverage. He didn't ask how far, But it sounded like that is what they are going to do for us, just this. It is not going tobe a recall, it will be the replacement if the balljoint goes bad, or if your dealer is cool:O). He did tell me that it is smart to shave off the 2mm on the upper balljoints to fix the angle somewhat also.

Not that it makes a difference to the thread, and I may still have mine replaced if I can, but I just took my a-arms off the sled (getting ready to exchange -- for color--with a buddy of mine) and they are perfect. Not a bit of slop...1200 miles.

Interesting.

Was anything mentioned about subframes,a arms, spindles etc?

And your buddy better get another 1200 miles on them. ;)!

Not sure if this is the right place for this but I think you all should be aware. The parts site on yamaha.com is not always correct. I double checked there twice to ensure that the a-arms I was exchanging with my buddy were the correct ones for both our sleds. As it turns out, the MTX A-arms are at least an inch shorter.

It makes sense, since it has a narrower ski stance, but the part numbers were identical when I added them to my picklist.

Ah well, a couple hours wasted, but any wrenching is a good learning exercise.

I didn't see that they were the same at least between the MTX/RTX
08 FX Nytro MTX: #37 8HA-23540-00-P0 FRONT UPPER ARM COMP. (LEFT) S8 FOR DPBSE
08 FX Nytro RTX: #37 8GL-23540-00-P0 FRONT UPPER ARM COMP. (LEFT) S8 FOR DPBSE

interesting...Was that on Yamaha.com?

What I did was add a-arms and all associated parts to the picklist from the MTX and then switch to Nytro and add the parts again. Instead of having two different parts listed, I had 2 of everything in my cart. Did it twice. Like I said, lesson learned, and it makes perfect sense.

A-arms going in for paint tomorrow. White I believe will be the color of choice. Got the silver rear idler on, but it looks terrible with the yellow slides. Never thought I'd want a set of slides to burn fast LOL.

Yes, it was the link at the top of the forum, and thats what I did at first as well just to see if you were right(wishlist). Maybe you missed the correct number cause everything else would be the same I think??? go have a look again and it should be part #37 on the ski fiche. Curious to know what went wrong and caused you the extra work.

All I can think is that when I changed the machine drop down selector, the parts list did not re-load for the new machine. You may have to go back to the start. So while I thought I was actually viewing a different machine, it may well have been the same one.

Not a big deal. But something to watch out for I guess.

Goddo, are you having your a arms painted or powder coated ? I was going to try paint and see how it holds up, but I was told that a few runs through the woods and the paint will chip and peel off very easily. Perhaps it all comes down to prep work...

Mine were dropped off at a local paint shop this morning. The guys know me there and I told them to make sure they do at least 2 coats of clear to protect the finish from trees, shrubs, etc.

If I get 2 years out of them I'll be happy. He didn't give me a price, but hopefully it wont cost too much. Prep is definitely important. Paint won't stick unless it has the right surface to adhere to. Clear coat is a must.

I read in another thread where a guy used an airplane paint for his and they held up great.
