I bought a new warrior and had a question to the experienced guys and gals about cold weather starting of the RX-1. I have read in other posting that it is pretty reliable to start to about -25 degrees. Is this true. Has anyone ever had a problem in real cold weather. I ask because I want to do a few canadaian trips this year, (quebec and maybe new brunswick) and was unsure about leaving it out side in the drastic cold over night and then trying to start inthe morning. Seeing how there is no pull cord, worried about battery strength and oil viscosity not allowing it to turn over. At home i got a heated garage so no problems there!!! :D I have heard of a magnetic block heater but cannot find one. Any ideas, input and stories are welcomed.

Thanks for all the info guys!!!!

I've never had a problem starting. The stock oil is the cold starting formula 5x30. The sled started great everytime, even in -30 degrees.I did make a set of emegency jumper cables though.Don't think you have to worry! Honk

The coldest day I had to start it was -35 C (-31 F). It started no problems but it sounded like a Massey Ferguson Tractor until she warmed up...after 10 mins. :p

Thoroughly tested last winter in -35 deg C and NEVER a problem. It was SO cold. It took about six 3 second bursts before it fired.... but was still running before the mach Z's and zr900's. 8)

Stock battery is amazing. It can crank and crank. No worries there. 8)

Stock oil is fine as well, however, have switched to synthetic after 4000kms.

Magnetic block heater probably wont work well because it's aluminum. This year I put an inline heater in from www.royaldistributing.com (part no. 12-912037 1" ENGINE HEATER CDN$39.95) just cause. Not really needed. It's a simple install in the lower section of the vertical hose beside the oil tank.

I have one of those little (200watts) magnetic heaters (I used it on a propane tank in cold weather). I was planing on putting it on my oil tank in really cold weather.

I bought one of those heaters just in case. I never needed or used it. We get real cold in western manitoba & at -30ish it fires right up!

ahhh, good idea.... i forgot about the oil tank being made of steel  ... then it should work fine.... will you zip tie inplace or remove it for riding? :?:

That is GREAT idea!!!! thought I would have to get that thing down in the block and we all know there is very little room there....... Plus easy on, easy off.... do not need to permanatly install....

JDK, where did you get that heater?????

Every one thank you!!! :D It is very refreshing to hear that it is not a huge problem.

now for the snow!!!!

they do make a flexible heater pad. They make them in different sizes and it's made of high temp rubber. I put a 4"x4" square one on the crankcase of my Yamaha Kodiak and it worked great. I used high temp silicone to bond it to the crank case. The pads are really light weight and that may be a option for a perm mount.

And who might THEY be? Sounds interesting....

Mine sat in the back of my truck @-36C for over 12 hours and started fine....It was pretty load but cranked over like crazy...it took a bit of coaching the throttle to keep it going at first....starting in cold weather is not a problem...and really its not hard to turn that key... :D ...JD

I'm sure you must be mistaken..... our Massey Ferguson always ran so smooooth. Hey  , what's an IT guy doing with tractors anyway.?... :p

thanks for the input. Honestly VERY surprised that it still does start at -36. I would expect it to be rough but amazed that it would actually turn over........ So that makes me very, very :D

Massey Furg's are nice but .... still a john deere guy over here.

ooppss....

still looking for a name or something to go on. I looked up the link at royal powersports but could not get a picture. Like to know what I am buying. Besides really like the slap on the side of the oil resevoir idea...

Thanks for the help....

LET IT FREAKING SNOW ALREADY!!!!!
