Magnetic engine block heater????

LB,

Wish I could provide you with all the gory details but I'm no expert.... what I do know is that he installed a command start on an older Chrysler that had carb and auto-choke. I believe it had a solenoid to actuate the throttle (ie: pump) as you described. I know they did many more that way. They worked, for sure, but were somewhat problematic.

Here's a funny one for ya.... one of the first cars they installed it on... the guy just HAD to have it no matter what..... it was an 84 corvette with manual transmission..... the long and the short of it is.... a chevy doesn't make a very good living room ornament -- especially if its your chevy and in your neighbour's living room..

BTW, they never did find a way to create a sensor (at least a feasible one) that could detect whether or not the car was in gear.... that's why if you have an auto-start in a manual car these days.... you have to install so many safety switches to make it happen...

LB,

Are you up for the task if I can my hands on some old leftover remote start parts?

I HAVE NOT INSTALLED A RUBBER OIL PAN HEATER ON MY RX YET. THE ONE I INSTALLED ON MY KODIAK I GOT FROM NAPA AUTO PARTS. IT WAS SOMETHING LIKE $14 US.

Deshkae,

That rubber oil pan heater you suggested looks like the best/easiest way to go and very reasonable cost.

My friend had one of those magnetic ones and it didn't seem to stick very well to the RX1 oil tank. He's going to try to make it work by using the high-temp adhesive. He uses them exclusively and likes them alot.

Engine heater

You boys do what you want but me and my two RX buddies put heaters on our RX-1's. Northern Ontario last Feb. 45 Deg. F. below zero. Mine was the only 4-stroke that would start. Sounded like it was coming apart when it fired. We jumped the other two RX's and got them going. Four V-twin Ski-doos- forget it. Took an hour. Heaters should be standard on those pigs. By all means, if you are going on a saddle bag trip to Canada install a heater and carry jumpers. My2cents. Later, slim

I had one occasion last year up in KMER's neck of the woods where mine would not start. It was -40C or -42C and the sled sat from about 4:30 until 8:30 in the morning. It didn't seem to be able to turn over fast enough but the battery sure held in there a long time. Got a taxi over to jump it using a small set of cables I carry and it went. The day before the other RX-1 on the trip wouldn't start in the same conditions. I have since put in the circulation heater that I got from my local dealer for about $40. To me it seems to be the best option for warming up the block. Block heaters on cars heat the coolant too. As someone has already mentioned, this is a dry sump motor that takes awhile for the oil to circulate in. I think a battery blanket would also be the trick along with the circulation heater.
