Making an after market exhaust quieter..

I just had some thoughts after installing my ceramic coated White Knuckle QC-1 exhaust. I love the weight savings and could never reinstall the 30lb stock exhaust. The sound is really loud at idle, but over 5000 rpms not really that much louder so reasonably trail friendly.

I was wondering if anyone with a lot of exhaust experience would consider packing an exhaust with stainless steel wool or fiber glass exhaust packing to lessen the sound some. Could you just stuff some inside the can to deaden the sound some? It's just a thought, but I am curious.

There is muffler fiberglass packing but find out from wgite knukle if the exhaust is stuffed already

The muffler will have to be disected, or as mentioned above, call White Knuckle to find out what type of muffler the QC-1 uses. I've done plenty of exhaust work, and will be happy to help ya...

You guys have to understand one quick easy rule of thumb here. volume equals sound. to get less sound you need more volume. more volume equals more weight, more weight equals no sales. These are supposed to be lightweight exhaust, therefore they are made as small as possible, while still trying to keep sound down and power up. You can make a smaller quieter version, but it's very costly, and makes shitloads less power. Tried it, been there, done that. We have, and I'm sure everyone else has too, tried smaller quiet versions, and they do not work. But if everyone would call and say, hey I'll buy one with 10 less horsepower and a torque curve that sucks as long as it's quiet then hell I'll build thousands of them. Of course the cost is going to be close to a grand, but i'm sure you'll pay it right.?

So as you can see, exhausts aren't as simple as they seem sometimes. empty cans with baffles, cans with packing, cans with packing and baffles, quiet cores, chambers, velocity tubes, hemholz and other methods for sound reduction have been looked at. It comes down to cost, and demand.

That was the answer I was looking for. I did not know if the exhaust was a resonator chamber or a restrictive packed chamber (ie steel wool or fiberglass). Well I guess I am stuck with the loudness since I am not willing to add back the weight. I just wish they could make the same exhaust about 10% quieter. Then again some else likely wants 10% louder. Its all about the compromise.

If you dump the exhaust to the tunnel, it will do what you want, if all you want is 10% quieter. Others have done this and made a real improvement in noise reduction.

Loving my QC-1

Well after enough miles on the White Knuckle exhaust I am a converted big fan of the sound and especially the mid range power boost. With the ECP and exhaust there is a really huge mid range bump in horse power. I can lift the skis at 30 to 70 MPH easy whereas before no way. ECP only helps it breath in better, but you don't really see all the benefits until you let it breath out better too. If I hadn't tried it myself I would not have believed in the improvement. The sound is only really loud at take off once you hit 30MPH it's about the same as stock. Under 30 it does pop and burble a lot. My riding buddies only commented on it during take off and said it's a real head turner at the gas station when you take off.
