Have some premature slider wear at 1100 miles and I always road in good snow conditions to boot.Yamaha should really address this problem free of charge.Wishful thinking eh?
Where has guys been mounting these kits Yamaha sells? At the back just in front of the rear wheels or near the front wheels.
l was thinking about putting the wheel kit at the back and then running an extra set of wheels near the front ones as well.I also bought the graphite sliders to see if it helps.
Any input here would be great
Thanks
I had serious issues with slide wear on my 07 RTX also. You can search for posts by me here about it. Admittedly the snow conditions were marginal at best most of last season.
My fix for wear at the curve in the rails was to replace the drive sprockets with Skidoo intro/extrovert drivers and then run the track fairly loose.
My fix for wear in the middle of the skid was to install a pair of optional Yamaha idlers in the 3rd pair of idler mounts. If you look at the on-line fische at yamaha-motor.com you can see all of the parts and where they install. This is not the regular marginal snow kit, but is an extra set of stock size idlers that can optionally be installed specifically for the RTX or Nytro.
With the two of these, the slider wear was still rapid for the first 1/2 and then it slowed right down. We went on a long saddle bag trip and ended up running out of snow. After about 50 miles with literally no snow, my sliders never wore through. This same trip also included over 1000 miles on absolutely rock hard ice trails (huge rain storm with +20°C temperatures followed by -25°C temps and us riding these conditions for 3 days, 12 hours per day). An Apex ER with me went through 4 pairs of slides on the same trip.
Still, since they still always wore 1/2way through so quickly, this season I'm seriously considering also installing Skidoo idler wheels. The extra 2.5mm of radius will give an extra 2.5mm of margin to the slider wear everywhere except at the very rear.
Another tip for you is to make sure all of the idler wheels are down as low as they will go. If you loosen the bolts off, you'll find the idlers can move up and down a good 1/4". If they move up, either from where they were installed or from hitting hard bumps, the slides will wear very quickly. This is a very common cause of very fast slide wear with all of Yamaha 4-strokes.
