There's only one download for all OS's.
Vista is not same as Windows 7 in all regards, Windows 7 in newer then Vista, as Vista is newer then Windows XP, so if it works in Windows 7 it will work in Vista, i also talked with the developer of the MCX display and he said that it works as the new drivers is developed for all OS's, including Windows 7 and Vista.
Regarding USB extension cable, i have an 2m (6.56foot) long extension and it's no problem, i suspect that some computers (usb controllers) is more sensitive to signal strength, longer cable = weaker signal, so maybe there could be some problem with long extensions, but 2m is used to almost all printers for ex. so it should always work, longer then that might not.
When you installed the new drivers, how did you do it?
I did as this, with the display connected:
1. Go to device manager.
2. On right port, should say something about usb to serial converter, right click and choose properties.
3. Choose tab "drivers"
4. Choose "update drivers".
5. Choose the second option "choose drivers on the computer (manually installation)"
6. Browse to the folder you extracted the downloaded drivers to.
7. Choose next a.s.o. finish the upgrade.
8. When done Windows should want to restart the computer, this is necessary to finish the upgrade, the drivers is in use so they will be substituded while it reboots.
Good luck!

You wrote that once already, i know for a fact that the previous owner of your sled used extension cable because i was there and helped him the first time he used it, so you have either something with your computer or your extension cable.
1-2m (3.4-6.8foot) isn't long and doesen't effect signal strength much, but as i wrote earlier, everything is possible, some computers maybe have bad usb controllers and cant read weaker signals, ever so slightly, so if you don't get connection after upgrading drivers, try without extension.

If it would have been anybody else but you i wouldn't have cared less about it, but someone who gives negative rating to someone giving tips regarding clutching, writing an comment for a second time that doesen't solve the problem i couldn't let it go, hope everybody understand.

Thanks Tbird for the link.
I have two WinXP garage computers for tuning and stuff. The drivers will come in handy when I change out the old laptops
