I was working on my dad's sled this weekend since I was home and we took his secondary off to grease the bearings and when it was off I noticed the debris in the picture. Some background the sled has 1600 miles but he took it in for the jackshaft update at around 600 miles and at 900 it fell apart (didn't tighten the locking collar down) Well then I started looking the thing over and found that he didn't replace the washers behind the secondary at all, so I ordered new washers and it took most of the side to side slop that his secondary had compared to mine. I'm not sure if running it for 300 miles without the right washers could produce this damage or not? Maybe its not even damage and normal?

Also are the sheaves supposed to close tight or spaced apart like this one? I have my sled in storage yet or I would look at that. Thanks!

I took the belt adjustment washers out of my secondary just to see if the clutch faces would touch and they certainly do..they will grind together when they close so that is probably how the damage occured. There needs to be some space between the two to prevent them from grinding away at each other.

O.K, sorry to highjack the thread, but,
I have noticed other posts that refer to "the picture",
I see no picture and dont see any link to one, could someone tell me what, or where the picture is?
Thanks for removing a portion of my ignorance.

What you may find is that what you are looking at is the flash from the casting process. When I tore mine apart for the first time there was a ton of flash. Just ground it off smooth and no issues. If it's loose then it may just be flash that finally broke off. I would just separate the shives and take a look.

It's only excess flashing and it's very normal to be seen in every Yamaha secondary clutch. As long as it doesn't interfere with the other half of the sheave I would not worry about it....

If you're not logged in, you don't get the pictures. That may be your problem.

Hey kinger, you just need to remove the secondary and look on the back side of it, there are 3 belt deflection adjustment bolts. They each come with a small washer. I think what I told you was backwards in my first message. With no washers behind the bolt it should spread the secondary apart more. Yeah, I think that is how it goes. You'll see what I mean, when you remove the adjustment bolts the secondary should squeeze together more. Sorry for the previous mistake on my part!!!
