Thinking of putting on a taller windshield on Apex. Anyone know how much taller the midside accessory shield (14.25" tall according to catalog) is compaired to stock? Any opinions on how much better, if any, the mid protects vs. stock? Also, does the tall (16") accessory shield use braces. I remember reading about braces with either the tall or x-tra tall shield.
Thanks much!!

I went to the mid-windshield (approx. 2" higher), but it helps a great deal on cutting down on the cold ride and looks decent. If you put that one on the custom cover dosen't fit correctly with it but I just switch it back to the stock windshield for summer storage.

I'm going to put the 07 windshield on, that seems to be the right height.

The 07 windshield is somehow different from the 06? I hadn't heard this...
Well, it's different then my 06 GT, but probably not much different then on a regular 06 or 07 Apex ER. I believe the 07 is still the same on the ER as the 06.

I hope we get more solid info on the 07 stock, is it same as 06 mid or are there some advantages? I too am thinking 07 as replacement to the present low cut sexy non sheild

Yamadoo

I also believe you will gain at least 2 mph from the 07, maybe more. That low windshield is not very aero dynamic.

I'd keep the stocker one on there, The taller ones look out of place IMO. I rode in all temps and was never cold, maybe it's just me or it depends on how you ride, either way good luck whatever you do.

It's just those -20 degree days and with the way the hand warmers worked, my hands and face froze a couple of weekends this year and I ride as hard as I can without breaking the sled.

I dunno....being the selfish type I'm only looking at the standard Attak for comparison since that's what I'm buying. I went to Yamaha's site, pulled up pics of the 06 and pics of the 07 and set them side-by-side on my screen. Windshields look to be 100% identical in size and shape, only the graphics are different.

If anyone here sees or knows something different from that, please let me know...part of my $400 in accessories was going toward the optional mid windshield to replace my stock 07 Attak windshield, under the assumption of course that the 07 is identical to the 06, which it appears it is to me at least....

I for now am betting that a "different" higher/better windshield for 07 on these sleds is nothing but internet rumor.

I DO however see how the GT and RTX for 06 had a VERY poor low windshield compared tot he ER and the Attak. They had that stupid low cutout right in the face. Even the 07 RTX appears quite a bit lower than the other 07's. So maybe that's what many here are referring to.

Now to get back to answer the original poster's question...I guess it totally depends on which year and model of Apex you're talking about. I can see 3 different styles and heights that came standard on these sleds so far just from browsing the site...

My research on this site has told me that the optional mid height windshield is the best available in terms of protection, even better than the tall and extra tall (both of which I'm told have the braces you were asking about). My understanding is that the optional mid windshield 14.25" in the accessory catalog is a bit higher and offers better protection than the stock med windshield sold on many of these sleds. But this is all regurgitated info from others here on this site...if I'm wrong you'll have to blame someone else....

If a dealer-type here can jump in and clear the fog for us all, it would be much appreciated. In the meantime, here's another thread on this same topic that ended up getting me just as confused as this one has, but might help:

im going with the 07 rtx windshield on mine! i have froze for years, why stop now! it all started with my old wedge chassis poo (6" above headlight!), continued with my viper (low black yamaha one) and this sled isnt going to be any different. are you guys that get real cold wearing open helmets with goggles? that is the problem with some people. i cant wear those, too cold! full face only for me.

My dealer has been telling me since March that the Mid-height windshield is on back order. He said this to me again two weeks ago. Has anyone heard this from their dealer? If it really on back order please let me know. If it is not on back order can someone give me the part number that is available so I can get it to my dealer.

Thanks,

jon

I just order some mics parts from my dealer last week and he told me that lots of stuff from Yamaha has been on super back-order. Not only for sleds - but for bikes as well. My Nytro was delivered with the hand guards missing, and it took me almost 3 months to get them.

i went with the tall shield on the apex and have never regretted the warmth it provides. yes it has the braces. the handgurds will clear with braces installed. my be ugly but my grip warmers actually worked after installation. my buddy has optianal mid height and there is no comparison in coverage. if you want warmth it is the tall.
remember if it looks cool it is.

I went with the mid. Like others have noted it is taller, but the best part is it is wider on the top part and wider overall. I am like 6'2" tall, no regrets with the purchase.

I dont know how anybody could ride a cold day with the stock GT or RTX shield. Even the stock ER wasnt enough protection for me.

Out of stock on the mid? Have you tried Port in the vendor section?
