Looks like we might head to the Snowy's the first week of March!! My Apex is currently a 144x1.75 and I was thinking of setting back my ZX2 skid or getting longer extensions!
What tracks are good and which ones should I stay away from - I would like to use my 8T 2.52 drivers if possible, any ideas on what size track will fit?
Front shocks - what is the ctc on the mtn front end, if I go to the narrow front will I need shorter shocks?
Gearing reccomendations?
Clutching?

If this is the first time you have went to the mtns i would really suggest renting a xp or something like that. I unfortunatly had a apex mtn the first time i ever sledded in the mtns and i got stuck at least 30 times the first day i felt like i had gotten beatten with a bat repeatly and really didnt have a great time it took a long time to get use to the apex i finally did but if i did it again it would have been allot nicer learning how to ride in the mtns on a lighter machine and i have at least 20 years of flat lander riding under me things are allot different out their when you are always on a slope. Just my .02 cents the apex runs good and does okey but not a great first timer sled. But if you take it out their i would definatly try to at least get a 162 X 16 X 2.25 track on it as it helps allot march riding is a little different due to the snow is usually setup so you can get away with a smaller track. But i probably wouldnt shorten you stance just take out your equilizer bar and set your front shocks to the hardest setting as well put your rear suspensions limiter straps to the second or third shortest hole. As well handlebar extension is a must makes it allot easier to throw the sled around. Have a great time mtn sledding is addicting and you will soon find yourself into turbos 174 tracks and major weight diets on the sled.

Run the high elevation clutching, unhook the swaybar, mabee gear it down and RIDE IT. Unless there is 4 feet of fresh pow you will be fine. If you get stuck 30 times your doing something wrong.lol

I kind of agree with both prior posts. It just depends on the kind of rider you are and your strength and the kind of shape your in. If you have some powder experience and you're able to handle a heavy sled at high altitude for a full day, then I agree with the second posting, 'gear it down and ride it!'. If you have very limited powder experience and you're not in the best shape, then I agree with the first posting, and you should look into renting a lighter long-tracked two stroke that will be much easier to for you to manuver. Be honest with yourself on the question of your physical shape, the mountains, their lack of oxygen, and their extreme terrain can make for a VERY rough day if your not prepared. At best you can waste a lot of money, at worst you can get hurt or killed. If you come to Grand Lake, CO, let me know, I'll take you up.
Well the last time I was out West was 2 years ago - I was riding a 136x2 Rev and had a blast - more sled would have been great, but we had a great trip with the equipment we had. I don't want to over think this, yes more trak would be great - it seems like I open pandora's box: drivers, track, skid set back and or different extensions . . . I am willing to do it if need be! The front of my sled has a wide front end on it now, so I am going to hange that for sure and try to get some Gen II skis! The sled has been put on a diet: Mountain Mod Seat, Tunnel Dump Exhaust, CR Tunnel, removed headlight (running PIAA type lights), and some other goodies!

computer is fine at any altitude, Im not sure if the Gen II skis will help with the front end of your sled at 45" already.
Grapeape - I am going to pull the wide front, I was thinking for better flotation - are they worth it??

Get a set of Mountain Skis - If you are doing a track, go widest, longest, deepest lug that you can without changing drivers - not worth the hassle in my opinion unless you are going to stick with the new drivers when you go home.
The snow conditions this year have been hit or miss. Over New Years it was waist-chest deep. Right now they are saying 6-8 inches of snow on a good base - you wouldn't need a new track or skis for that.
We've gotten a foot of snow at our cabin in the last two weeks (Snowy's) - I hope some snow storms roll in soon.

Ah i thought your profile said ontario makes sence ya i am sure that BC conditions in march are different then colorado's. I am thinking you guys have more trails and stuff down their not quite and much open backcountry and stuff so might be a little easier to get around on 144 track. Still the apex is heavy as #*$&@ and i am not sure if i would like much of a shorter track then a 162 in any powder conditions just my 0.02 cents as long as the snow is set up it will be fine but if their is 3 feet of powder i would park it and rent a sled. But lower gearing will help for sure.

For me, the Gen II are the single best mod I have done to the Apex, but as you know I am no spring chicken either. TMK is most likely your best ride report as well, and if he feels there is not enough pow to warrant the gen II skis, then I would wait. The downside to he skis is when there is not enough snow they can be tough to deal with.

Gen 2 and ride it --- they will make you get around. If you are willing to spend the money and time on rail extensions and track the 151 or 159 inch Polaris series 4 tracks work well and are real cheap they also fit with the 8 tooth 2.52 drivers.
I have a Apex MT with Simons Gen 2s, a ZX2 skid and a 156" track it rocks.
I would ride my own sled any-day even with the shorter track-but that is me.
