I busted my second Mono shock cable adjuster so I am going to go without. Does anybody know which way to turn the adjuster with a screwdriver for softer and harder? Counterclockwise or clockwise?

typically clockwise will adjust it stiffer. You are basically turning IN a screw to restrict oil flow

OK thanks. Now just have to figure out a good setting for it.

So there must be a gear inside the remote adjuster that reverses the direction of rotation? Obviously on the remote adjuster, clockwise is softer.

Yes, the adjuster knob turns a gear set, and that reverses the rotation. I removed the adjuster and blocked the hole in the tunnel with an old license plate. Rode like that for 10000 miles, never missed it, and much less ice crunching around under there in the morning.
