The manual refers to using the dial to adjust damping force; either hard or soft. Is damping a compression or rebound term, or both?

Thanks,
Jon

The term damping applies to all shock action. The adjuster on the mono shock controls both, but as I remember it has a greater affect on compression.

the mono with the adjust on the side of the tunnel has a ratio between compression and rebound as you dial it thru its entire range.

The dial affects the shock valving, it gives you the ability to firm up the damping "rates" when turned to hard. Compression in stroke, rebound return stroke. Also remember the dial makes two full turns, and the suspension is weight sensetive. If you are over 180, get the heavier rate spring as no dial adjustment will compensate.

I weigh in at 225 without riding gear. I ride aggressively and HATE to bottom out! Was thinking about going aftermarket suspension, but was looking for advice if the stocker will work with some set up.

Get a new spring. Yamaha sells replacement springs for heavier riders for the stock suspension. I weigh around 175-180 with gear and would never put the stock spring on my Apex. I had the stock one on my RX-1 and it was too soft. I ride hard and I still bottomed my Apex (very large moguls at good speed) out this year a couple times with the preload at one. So this Fall I have already set it to two. With the stiffness of the new spring you should not have a problem bottoming out at all once you find your right setting.

Here is the spring:

I was in the same boat as you, 250 without gear. Get Yamaha's 6.5kg/mm spring and your problems will be solved.

Thanks fellas! :-o
